Bernie Banton
Bernard Douglas Banton AM (13 October 1946 – 27 November 2007) was an Australian social justice campaigner. He was the widely recognized face of the legal and political campaign to achieve compensation for the many sufferers of asbestos-related conditions, which they contracted after either working for the company James Hardie or being exposed to James Hardie Industries' products. Banton himself suffered from multiple forms of asbestos-related diseases, being diagnosed with asbestosis and also asbestos-related pleural disease (ARPD) in January 1999 after having worked at James Hardie Industries, decades earlier, making asbestos lagging. These conditions required him to carry an oxygen tank wherever he went. On the 17 August 2007, he was also diagnosed with terminal peritoneal mesothelioma asbestos cancer, dying a short 103 days later. Bernie Banton Bridge
The Bernie Banton Bridge is a multi-span concrete girder bridge located in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. Built in 1971, the bridge carries two lanes of vehicular traffic with two pedestrian sidewalks. The bridge was built to replace the often flooded Marsden Street Weir and was originally called the Marsden Street Bridge. The bridge was renamed in 2006 in honour of the asbestos diseases campaigner, Bernie Banton. Description The Bernie Banton Bridge crosses the Parramatta River and is an important north-south transport link between Parramatta's CBD and North Parramatta. ''Enough Rope with Andrew Denton'' (often shortened to ''Enough Rope'') is a television interview show originally broadcast on ABC1 in Australia. The title of the show came from the phrase " give someone enough rope and they'll hang themselves". The Bernie Banton Foundation was an Australian not-for-profit organisation founded in June 2009 by its CEO, Karen Banton, the widow of Bernie Banton AM. The Parramatta River is an intermediate tide-dominated, drowned valley estuary located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. With an average depth of , the Parramatta River is the main tributary of Sydney Harbour, a branch of Port Jackson. Secondary tributaries include the smaller Lane Cove and Duck rivers.
