Bernhard Grant
Bernhard Shirley Henniker Grant (19 November 1887 – 4 March 1966) was a British philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1940. Grant was born in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent, to William Shirley Petman Grant and Edith Margaretta Catherine Grant. He had an award-winning collection of stamps of the Falkland Islands and of Iceland Experimental Airmails 1930–50. Philatelist
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp quest"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists
The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. Boughton Monchelsea
Boughton Monchelsea is a village and civil parish in the borough of Maidstone in Kent, England. The civil parish lies on a ragstone ridge situated between the North Downs and the Weald of Kent and has commonly been called Quarry Hills. The village itself is located south of the town of Maidstone. History The village name comes from a corruption of the name of the Norman family given the manor after the Conquest: ''Montchensie'' who held the manor until 1287''The Kent Village Book'' Alan Bignell 1986 and the Anglo Saxon Boc Tun (Beech Tree settlement). The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Boltone, then Bouton, Bocton, and probably via Bocton de Montchensie to the current Boughton Monchelsea. Maidstone
Maidstone is the largest Town status in the United Kingdom, town in Kent, England, of which it is the county town. Maidstone is historically important and lies 32 miles (51 km) east-south-east of London. Maude Carey
Ellen Maude Carey (1888 – 8 August 1950) was the Colonial Postmaster of the Falkland Islands from 1 January 1934. She is thought to have been the first woman postmaster in the British Empire. She was also the first woman in the Islands to hold a driving licence. Early life Ellen Maude Carey was born in 1888, one of eleven children of Charles Carey and Ellen Elizabeth Carey, née Rudd.
