Bernard Street, Edinburgh
Bernard Street is a thoroughfare in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. It runs west north westerly from the junction of Constitution Street and Baltic Street to meet the Water of Leith at The Shore. It forms the northern boundary of what was known in the 19th century as 'Old Leith'. Overview Whilst some sources claim the street is named after innkeeper Bernard Lindsay who was granted the barony of the area by King James VI in 1779 this is clearly an error as the street is named St Bernard Street in the 1777 plan of Leith, linking the concentric street names of St Giles Street and St Andrew Street. The second issue in the theory is that, if true, it should have led to its being named Lindsay Street. In 1780, the first public sewer in Scotland was built in Bernard Street, flowing into the Water of Leith. The iron seal of the sewer is still visible by the bridge at the end of Bernard Street. John Paterson (architect)
John Paterson (died 1832) was a Scottish architect who trained with Robert Adam (1728–1792) whom he assisted with his work on Edinburgh University Old College and Seton House Castle. Life He was the second son of George Paterson (d. 1789) an Edinburgh architect and builder linked to Robert Mylne and living on St John Street in the Canongate in a building he had built with Francis Charteris, Earl of Wemyss and March and thereafter shared. Its site is remembered in the building Charteris Land, a modern building which replaced it. The family also owned a small estate at Monimail in Fife called Cunnochie. The estate passed to the oldest son (also George Paterson) on the death of the father. John lived on St John Street until 1784 and then moved to Elgin, Moray, Elgin to work with Sir James Grant. James Currie (shipowner)
James Currie FRSE MA LLD JP (13 April 1863 – 3 November 1930) was a Scottish businessman who was the owner and senior partner of the international shipping company, the Currie Line. He was also a keen amateur botanist, mineralogist and archaeologist, making sufficient impact on the Scottish world of science as to rise to be President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Life Currie was born at Catherine Bank House on Newhaven Road (demolished c.1900) in Leith, Scotland on 13 April 1863. Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops. Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. Leith Banking Company
The Leith Banking Company (also referred to as the Leith Bank) was a bank based in the town of Leith (now part of Edinburgh), Scotland, which opened in 1793 and was forced to merge due to debt in 1842. The bank was established by 18 partners, mainly merchants, on 1 January 1793. Partners James Ker and Henry Johnston were joint managers. Sir Walter Scott is believed to have been an account holder. The headquarters of Leith Bank for the larger part of its existence was a two-storey building on Bernard Street, Leith, built in 1805-06. David Watson Stevenson
David Watson Stephenson (25 March 1842 – 18 March 1904) was a Scottish sculptor, executing portraits and monuments in marble and bronze. Biography Stevenson was born in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland, on 25 March 1842, the son of William Stevenson and Margaret Kay. He studied at the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh. From 1860 he took an eight-year apprenticeship under the sculptor William Brodie.
