Bernard Martin (rugby League)
John Bernard 'Bernie' Martin (1909-1991) was an Australian rugby league player who played in the 1930s and 1940s. Playing career A St. George local junior from Arncliffe, New South Wales, Martin was graded at St. George as a winger in 1930. He played five seasons with St. George : 1930,1933-1934 and 1937–1938. Martin played in the 1933 Final in which the Dragons were runners-up to Newtown on 9 September 1933. He also played for South Sydney between 1935–1936, and finished his career at Canterbury-Bankstown in 1940. The New South Wales rugby league team has represented the Australian state of New South Wales in rugby league football since the sport's beginnings there in 1907. Also known as the Blues due to their sky blue jerseys, the team competes in the annual State of Origin series. This annual event is a series of three games competing for the State of Origin shield. The 1933 NSWRFL season was the twenty-sixth season of Sydney’s professional rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Eight teams from across the city contested the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership during the season, which lasted from April until September, and culminated in Newtown’s victory over St. George in the final. The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. They currently compete in the NSW Cup competition, having left the top grade after the 1983 NSWRFL season. Edward Thomas Martin (1912 – 1 April 1937) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s. Younger brother of Bernie Martin, 'Eddy' or 'Ted' Martin was graded at St. George Dragons from the Arncliffe Scots junior league.
