Bernard Gauthier (judoka)
Henri Bernard Gauthier (12 January 1926 – 7 August 1987) was a judo practitioner involved in the creation of the Pan-American Judo Union. He served as the first president of the Canadian Judo Federation from 1949 until 1960. He introduced the formation of several judo leagues for the expansion of judo throughout the Canada and abroad. He maintained continuous liaison with the International Judo Federation and the affiliated national delegations for the purpose of exchanging on technical and administrative matters. Background In 1951, Gauthier represented the interests of Judo at the First Canadian Sports conference held in Ottawa. He served as a member of the executive board of the Canadian Sports council from 1952-54. He held the positions of secretary and treasury for the Canadian Amateur Sports from 1951-55. Masao Takahashi
Masao Takahashi (June 24, 1929 – February 14, 2020) was a Canadian judoka, author, coach, and founder of the Takahashi School of Martial Arts (Est. 1969) in Ottawa, Ontario. He was involved in judo for more than 70 years, and was ranked ''hachi-dan'' (eighth-degree black belt), making him one of the highest ranked Canadian judoka. In 2002 he was decorated by the Emperor of Japan with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette, in recognition of his service to improving the status of Japanese Canadians through his lifelong commitment to the promotion and development of Judo in Canada. He was inducted into the Judo Canada Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2005 Takahashi co-authored a book, ''Mastering Judo'', with his family. Judo In Canada
The Japanese martial art and combat sport judo has been practised in Canada for over a century. The first long-term judo dojo in Canada, Tai Iku Dojo, was established by a Japanese immigrant named Shigetaka Sasaki, Shigetaka "Steve" Sasaki in Vancouver in 1924. Sasaki and his students opened several branch schools in British Columbia and even trained Royal Canadian Mounted Police, RCMP officers until 1942, when Japanese Canadians were expelled from the Pacific coast and either Internment of Japanese Canadians, interned or forced to move elsewhere in Canada due to fears that they were a threat to the country after Japan entered the World War II, Second World War. When the war was over, the government gave interned Japanese Canadians two options: Population transfer, resettle in Canada outside of British Columbia or Emigration, emigrate to Japan. The Japanese martial art and combat sport judo has been practised in the Canadian province of Quebec since 1946. History Judo was introduced to Canada in the early twentieth century by Japanese migrants, and was limited to British Columbia until the forced expulsion, internment, and resettlement of Japanese-Canadians after Japan entered the Second World War in 1941. Japanese Canadian expulsion and internment was pivotal in the development of Canadian judo because it forced judoka to settle in other parts of the country. Some returned to the Pacific coast after 1949, but most found new homes in other provinces. New dojos opened in the Prairies, Ontario, and Quebec, primarily in the mid-to-late 1940s, and the centre of Canadian judo shifted from Vancouver to Toronto, where a significant number of judoka had settled after the war. A is a hall or place for immersive learning or meditation. This is traditionally in the field of martial arts, but has been seen increasingly in other fields, such as meditation and software development. The term literally means "place of the Way" in Japanese. History The word ''dōjō'' originates from Buddhism.
