Berks is an unincorporated community in Lancaster and Saline counties, Nebraska, United States. The community is located approximately three miles northeast of Crete on the Burlington Northern Railroad Line and one-half mile north of Nebraska Highway 33. History Some people hold Berks was the name of an early settler, while others believe the community was named after Berks County, Pennsylvania. Crete is a city in Saline County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,099 at the 2020 census. History The railroad was extended to the area in 1870, bringing settlers. In 1871, two rival towns merged to form a new town, which was named after Crete, Illinois, the former hometown of an early settler. Exeter is a village in Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 516 at the 2020 census. History In 1870, Dr. Horace Greeley Smith and his wife filed a homestead claim at the site of present-day Exeter. In an earlier scouting trip, Smith had determined that the site would lie near the line of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad as it extended itself westward. In the fall of 1871, the Burlington and Missouri was completed through Fillmore County. To promote settlement along its line, the railroad established towns at intervals. Towns were named alphabetically as the railroad ran westward from Lincoln. In eastern Fillmore County, a town was established on land donated by Smith and by James Dolan. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was a railroad that operated in the Midwestern United States. Nebraska Highway 33 is a highway in Nebraska. It runs for in southeastern Nebraska. It has a western terminus at U.S. Highway 6 and Nebraska Highway 15 west of Dorchester and an eastern terminus near Roca with U.S. Highway 77 and Nebraska Spur 55F. Route description Nebraska Highway 33 begins west of Dorchester at U.S. Highway 6 and Nebraska Highway 15. It runs at a southeasterly angle parallel to BNSF railroad tracks through farmland. It passes through Dorchester, then continues southeast until an intersection with Nebraska Highway 103. NE 33 and NE 103 overlap through Crete and goes northeasterly.
