Berkeley County, SC
Berkeley County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 229,861. Its county seat is Moncks Corner. After two previous incarnations of Berkeley County, the current county was created in 1882. Berkeley County is included in the Charleston-North Charleston, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Berkeley County was established in 1682. It was named after John and William Berkeley, co-owners of the Province of Carolina. It became part of the Charleston District in 1769. It did not exist as a District during most of the 19th century and generally was part of the Low Country culture. In 1882, after Democrats regained control of the state legislature following the Reconstruction era, they established the current incarnation of Berkeley County, with its seat at Mount Pleasant. The county seat was moved in 1895 to Moncks Corner. The Old Berkeley County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. ... Old Berkeley County Courthouse (South Carolina)
Old Berkeley County Courthouse, also known as Old Courthouse, is a historic courthouse located at Mount Pleasant, Charleston County, South Carolina. It was built in 1884, and is a two-story, rectangular, stucco over brick building in the Italianate style. It features large matching double stairways leading to the main entrance on the second floor. The building served as county courthouse for Berkeley County from 1884 to 1898. After 1898 until 1968, it was used by both Baptists and Lutherans as a church. It is now known as the G. Mcgrath Darby Building. Cypress Gardens (South Carolina)
Cypress Gardens is a preserve and gardens located at 3030 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, South Carolina, United States. The centerpiece of the garden is the blackwater bald cypress/tupelo swamp, surrounded with both boat and foot trails. History The gardens were originally part of the 1750 Dean Hall rice plantation, which depended on fresh water from the Cooper River. The area that is now a swamp was dug out and fitted with water gates to become a fresh water reservoir. It had fallen into disuse when the property was purchased by Benjamin Kittredge for a duck hunting reserve. During the Depression, over 200 men built out the of trails around the swamp. It was opened to the public in 1931. Kittredge's son donated the property to the City of Charleston on June 1, 1963. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 severely affected the park, causing it to close for a year. Williamsburg County, South Carolina
Williamsburg County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census its population was 31,026. The county seat and largest city is Kingstree. After a previous incarnation of Williamsburg County, the current county was created in 1804. History In 1867 the United States military oversaw the registering of voters in the county in preparation for the election of a new "reconstruction" government. In the Williamsburg District, there were 800 whites and 1,725 African-Americans who were eligible to vote under the new system. A convention was held to organize a new constitutions for the state of South Carolina, the Williamsburg District was represented by William Darrington who was a white reverend from the Williamsburg District who had opposed slavery before the war as well as C.M.
