Bergamasco, Piedmont
Bergamasco is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Alessandria in the Italian region Piedmont, located about southeast of Turin and about southwest of Alessandria. It is located between the hills of Montferrat and the Po Valley. This village is washed by the river Belbo. From 1000 to 1514, Bergamasco was owned by the Marchesi of Incisa Scapaccino. Then William IX Palaiologos, the marchese of Montferrat, caught and destroyed it. So it followed Montferrat's destiny. In 1944, during World War II, the town was part of the partisan Republic of Alto Monferrato. It was also one of the towns targeted in Operation Koblenz-Süd. Belbo
The Belbo is a river of southern Piedmont, Italy. It is a :wikt:right bank, right-side tributary of the Tanaro River, Tanaro. Geography The Belbo rises in the Langhe, on the borders between Piedmont and Liguria in the hills of Montezemolo. Republic Of Alto Monferrato
The Republic of Alto Monferrato was a short lived partisan state existing from September to December 2, 1944. The state came to exist following the political union of two Italian resistance movements based in Nizza Monferrato and Costigliole d'Asti of the southern Montferrat region. Its main territory comprised the towns of Moasca, San Marzano Oliveto, Calamandrana, Mombercelli, Bruno, Bergamasco, and Castelnuovo Belbo. There were four subdivisions of Alto Monferrato's troops; the VIII and IX division led by the Gribaldi Brigades, and the II and V division led autonomously. Operation Koblenz-Süd The republic was left to a swift and violent end in Operation Koblenz-Süd, a roundup led by Nazi German troops and supported by Fascist Italy. The House of Palaiologos ( Palaiologoi; grc-gre, Παλαιολόγος, pl. , female version Palaiologina; grc-gre, Παλαιολογίνα), also found in English-language literature as Palaeologus or Palaeologue, was a Byzantine Greek family that rose to nobility and produced the last and longest-ruling dynasty in the history of the Byzantine Empire. Montferrat
Montferrat (, ; it, Monferrato ; pms, Monfrà , locally ; la, Mons Ferratus) is part of the region of Piedmont in northern Italy.
