Beresford Baker
William Beresford Baker (31 October 1847 – 20 February 1933) was an Irish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Baker was born in Ireland in October 1847. He was commissioned in the British Army when he purchased the rank of ensign in the Royal Scots in October 1868. He purchased the rank of lieutenant in June 1871, before being promoted to captain in November 1877. Baker made a single appearance in first-class cricket when he played for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Dublin University at Dublin in 1895. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed for 30 runs in the MCC first innings by Ernest Ensor, while in their second innings he was run out for 3. He had married Isabella Wilson, of Birmingham, in 1877. The couple later settled in Dover, where they founded the Day Star Mission, a Christian missionary which educated and helped the disadvantaged in Dover. Baker died at Dover in February 1933. George de la Poer Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford, KP, PC (Ire) (8 January 1735 – 3 December 1800) was an Irish politician, known as George Beresford, 2nd Earl of Tyrone from 1763 to 1789. Beresford was the eldest son of Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone and his wife, Katherine, Baroness de la Poer. Julius Beresford
Julius Beresford (Wiszniewski) (18 July 1868 – 29 September 1959), also known as Berry or The Old Berry, was a British rower and coach. Beresford competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Life Beresford was the son of Julius Bernard Wiszniewski, an emigrant from Danzig and his wife Stella Louisa Davey. In 1871, the family were living in Tottenham. Julius Beresford dropped his father's surname "Wiszniewski" in 1914. Outside rowing, he was a partner in a furniture making business, Beresford & Hicks. Beresford initially sculled at Kensington Rowing Club in Hammersmith with some success, winning many trophies although failing in attempts at the Wingfield Sculls in 1902 and 1903 and in the London Cup at the Metropolitan Regatta. By 1904 he had decided that he had reached his limits as a single sculler and moved to Thames Rowing Club in order to row seriously in crew boats. John Claudius Beresford
John Claudius Beresford (23 October 1766 – 20 July 1846) was an Irish Tory Member of the UK Parliament representing Dublin City 1801–1804 and County Waterford 1806–1811. Early life Beresford was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. From 1783, Beresford served as a storekeeper for the port of Dublin. He was subsequently appointed to a wealthy sinecure post of Inspector-General of Exports and Imports. He was returned by his father, Hon. John Beresford, for the family borough of Swords to the Irish House of Commons in 1790. In 1798 he was returned for Dublin City, helped by his position in the port, and as a partner in a leading Dublin bank and a member of Dublin Corporation. Admiral Sir John Poo (or de la Poer) Beresford, 1st Baronet, (1766 – 2 October 1844) was a Royal Navy admiral, Second Sea Lord and Conservative MP. Early life Beresford was born in 1766 at Waterford. He was an illegitimate son of George Beresford, 2nd Earl of Tyrone; as well as a number of legitimate half-siblings, Beresford was also brother to General William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford, another illegitimate son. Beresford was educated at Catterick Bridge in Yorkshire before he joined the Royal Navy in 1782. Lord John George de la Poer Beresford (22 November 1773 – 18 July 1862) was an Anglican archbishop and Primate. Background Born at Tyrone House, Dublin, he was the second surviving son of George de La Poer Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford and his wife Elizabeth, only daughter of Henry Monck and maternal granddaughter of Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland. He attended Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1793 and a Master of Arts three years later. Career Beresford was ordained a priest in 1797 and began his ecclesiastical career with incumbencies at Clonegal and Newtownlennan. In 1799 he became Dean of Clogher; and was raised to the episcopate as Bishop of Cork and Ross in 1805. He was translated becoming Bishop of Raphoe two years later and was appointed 90th Bishop of Clogher in 1819. Herbert Beresford
Herbert Grahame Beresford (November 19, 1880 – June 15, 1938) was a land surveyor and politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1927 to 1932. Beresford was born in Tillicoultry, Scotland, and was raised in nearby Dollar. Educated at Dollar Academy and the University of St Andrews, he came to Canada in 1903 and worked as a land surveyor, serving as president of the Association of Manitoba Land Surveyors in 1918 and 1919. He was also active in the Scottish Rite of freemasonry. He was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1927 provincial election as an independent Progressive, defeated Liberal Fred C. Henry de La Poer Beresford, 3rd Marquess of Waterford KP (26 April 1811 – 29 March 1859), styled Lord Henry Beresford before 1824 and Earl of Tyrone between 1824 and 1826, was an Irish peer. He was the second son of the 2nd Marquess of Waterford, but became heir apparent to the marquessate on the death of his elder brother, George Beresford, Earl of Tyrone, in 1824. Henry de La Poer Beresford, 2nd Marquess of Waterford KP, PC (Ire) (23 May 1772 – 16 July 1826) styled Lord Le Poer from 1783 until 1789 and Earl of Tyrone from 1789 to 1800, was an Irish peer. Beresford entered the Irish House of Commons for Londonderry County in 1790 and sat for the constituency until the Act of Union. In 1798, he also stood for Coleraine but chose not to sit. Beresford became Marquess of Waterford in 1800 after the death of George Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford and was appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick on 14 March 1806. Beresford married Lady Susanna Carpenter, daughter of George Carpenter, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnell and Sarah Delaval, on 29 August 1805. Harry J. Beresford (4 November 1863 – 4 October 1944) was an English-born actor on the American stage and in motion pictures. He used the professional name Harry J. Morgan early in his career. Career Harry Beresford began his acting career in 1885, as a member of the chorus of ''Little Jack Sheppard'' at the Gaiety Theatre, London.
