Benton Academy is an independent, co-educational college preparatory school in Benton, Mississippi (United States). It is a member of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. It was founded as a segregation academy in 1969, and still did not enroll a single black student as of 2010. The school is located in Yazoo County, Mississippi. History Benton Academy was founded in 1969 as a segregation academy in response to the court ordered racial desegregation of public schools. The school opened in January 1970 in the middle of the school year. In 1977, the NAACP called for the principal of Benton High School to resign since he was perceived to condone segregation by sending his children to Benton Academy. When the school opened in 1969, it enrolled 460 students, but attendance fall to about 210 students in the 1970s and 1980s. Benton, Mississippi
Benton is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It was first named as a CDP in the 2020 Census which listed a population of 415. Mississippi Highway 433 passes through the community. History Benton was settled in 1828 by William P. Gadberry. The first county court was held in his log home. The county seat was moved from Beatties Bluff to Benton in 1829. Benton developed quickly, and soon became the center of trade. Benton was chartered in 1836, and incorporated in 1846. In 1849, the county seat was moved to Yazoo City, to which a Mr. Benton wrote at the time:With the removal of the county seat, Benton began to decline and each year its population lessens, and the few houses left are dilapidated, dingy, decaying, and tumbling down.
