Benny Wenda
Benny Wenda is a West Papuan independence leader and Chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP). He is an international lobbyist for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia. He lives in exile in the United Kingdom. In 2003 he was granted political asylum by the British government following his escape from custody while on trial. He has acted as special representative of the Papuan people in the British Parliament, United Nations and European Parliament. In 2017 he was appointed as the chairman for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), a new organisation uniting the three main political organisations struggling for the independence of West Papua. In 2020, the ULMWP announced a new constitution and government-in-waiting for the Republic of West Papua, with Wenda serving as interim president. Baliem Valley
The Baliem Valley ( id, Lembah Baliem; also spelled Balim and sometimes known as the Grand Valley) is a valley of the Central Highlands in Western New Guinea. Specifically in Highland Papua, Indonesia, which is inhabited mainly by the Dani people. The main town in the valley is Wamena, which lies on the Baliem River. The valley is about 80 km in length by 20 km in width and lies at an altitude of about , with a population of over 200,000. The discovery of the Baliem Valley to the Western world and the unexpected presence of its large agricultural population was made by Richard Archbold’s third zoological expedition to New Guinea in 1938. West Papua National Liberation Army
The West Papua National Liberation Army ( id, Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat; abbreviated TPNPB), commonly known in Indonesia as Armed Criminal Group ( id, Kelompok Kriminal Bersenjata; abbreviated as KKB), is a Western New Guinean insurgent group in Indonesia. It is the armed wing of the Free Papua Organization. It has been labelled as a terrorist organization by Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. Military strategy The TPNPB employs guerilla tactics to target and destroy industrial buildings as a rejection of Indonesian-led development. An Interpol notice is an international alert circulated by Interpol to communicate information about crimes, criminals, and threats by police in a member state (or an authorised international entity) to their counterparts around the world. Dortheys Hiyo Eluay (known as Theys Hiyo Eluay; 3 November 1937 – 10 November 2001) was an Indonesian local politician from Irian Jaya (currently Papua) turned West Papuan independence activist. Known as the former leader of Papua Presidium Council, he was known as the community leader in West Papua region. He was murdered by members of the Indonesian Army special forces command. Early life and political career Theys was born in Sereh village in Sentani, in what was then Dutch East Indies part of New Guinea. He went to the ''Jongensvervolgschool'' (post-primary education) in Yoka, a boarding school, led by the Dutch missionary Izaak Samuel Kijne. Papuan Peoples
The indigenous peoples of West Papua in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, commonly called Papuans, are Melanesians. There is genetic evidence for two major historical lineages in New Guinea and neighboring islands: a first wave from the Malay Archipelago perhaps 50,000 years ago when New Guinea and Australia were a single landmass called Sahuland, much later, a wave of Austronesian people from the north who introduced Austronesian languages and pigs about 3,500 years ago. They also left a small but significant genetic trace in many coastal Papuan peoples. Papua Presidium Council
The Papua Presidium Council ( id, Presidium Dewan Papua) was a 31-member umbrella group that was established to represent Indonesia's West Papua voice for the region's more autonomy within Indonesia and not necessarily independence. It is not only representing papuan groups but also migrants from other Indonesia islanders. It is commonly referred to as PDP among the Papuans. The Presidium presides the Papua Council, which is claimed as a re-emerged form of the New Guinea Council, established in 1961, which was approved and gazetted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands . Koteka Tribal Assembly
The Koteka Tribal Assembly ( id, Dewan Musyawarah Masyarakat Adat Koteka, abbreviated as DeMMaK) is a cultural organisation of the Koteka tribes of Papua region in Indonesia. It was established in January 2000 as an outcome of discussions among the elders of several tribes in the highlands of the region. The main goal of the assembly is to peacefully, democratically and legally work towards the recognition and protection of customary laws, values and beliefs of the Koteka peoples. Many activists from the organization who were involved in peaceful protests have been tortured and forced into exile. Cenderawasih University ( id, Universitas Cenderawasih) is a university in Jayapura, Papua province, Indonesia. The university is the leading educational institution in the province. The university has faculties in economics, law, teacher training and education, medical, engineering, and social and political science. Until 2002 the university had a faculty of agricultural sciences at Manokwari, which was then separated to form the Universitas Negeri Papua.
