Benjamin Franklin Reinhart
Benjamin Franklin Reinhart (1829 – May 3, 1885) was an American painter born near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, known for his genre, historical, and portrait paintings. Biography Reinhart studied at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1847 to 1850, spending his summers in Hayesville, Ohio. He studied art abroad in Rome, Paris and Düsseldorf for three years (1850 to 1853), traveling throughout the American midwest upon his return producing historical paintings and portraits. From 1859 to 1861 he worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then spent his time in London, England, during the American Civil War where he became known for his genre and religious paintings. In the late 1860s he returned to the United States where he lived in Kentucky, spending the following decade living in New York City where he held several exhibits at The National Academy, of which he was an elected member since 1871. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. It was fought between the Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"), the latter formed by states that had seceded. The central cause of the war was the dispute over whether slavery would be permitted to expand into the western territories, leading to more slave states, or be prevented from doing so, which was widely believed would place slavery on a course of ultimate extinction. Decades of political controversy over slavery were brought to a head by the victory in the 1860 U.S. presidential election of Abraham Lincoln, who opposed slavery's expansion into the west. Charles Stanley Reinhart
Charles Stanley Reinhart (May 16, 1844 – August 30, 1896), usually cited as C. S. Reinhart, was an American painter and illustrator. He was a nephew of artist Benjamin Franklin Reinhart. Biography C.S. Reinhart was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After having been employed in railway work and at a steel factory, he studied art at the Atelier Suisse in Paris and at the Munich Academy under Straehuber and Otto. Afterwards he settled in New York City, but spent the years 1882–86 in Paris where he exhibited regularly in the Salon. As a young artist, he along with Edwin Austin Abbey, Robert Blum, A.B. Frost and Howard Pyle, studied under Charles Parsons, who was head of the art department at Harper Brothers in the 1870s. A collection of 247 letters, eight original drawings, and two sketchbooks can be found at Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library.
