Tollywood Bangla
Tollywood, also known as Cinema of West Bengal, is an Cinema of India, Indian film industry of Bengali language, Bengali-language motion pictures. It is based in the Tollygunge region of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The origins of the nickname Tollywood, a portmanteau of the words Tollygunge and Cinema of the United States, Hollywood, dates back to 1932. It was a historically important film industry, at one time the centre of Indian film production. The Bengali film industry is known for producing many of Cinema of India, Indian cinema's most critically acclaimed global Parallel Cinema and art films, with several of its filmmakers gaining prominence at the National Film Awards, Indian National Film Awards as well as international acclaim. Satyajit Ray
Satyajit Ray (; 2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) was an Indian director, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, author, essayist, lyricist, magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher, and music composer. One of the greatest auteurs of film-making, Ray is celebrated for works including ''The Apu Trilogy'' (1955–1959), ''The Music Room'' (1958), ''The Big City'' (1963) and ''Charulata'' (1964). Ray was born in Calcutta to nonsense rhyme author Sukumar Ray. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent film-making after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film ''Bicycle Thieves'' (1948) during a visit to London. Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. Ray's first film, ''Pather Panchali'' (1955) won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Subhendu Chatterjee
Shubhendu Chatterjee, M.B.B.S. (29 November 1936 – 5 July 2007) was an Indian physician and actor, who is known for acting in Bengali television and films. A contemporary of actors Uttam Kumar and Soumitra Chatterjee, with whom he played second hero in many films, Dr. Chatterjee with age had graduated into character roles. Personal life His father was Shailendra Chattopadhay and mother was Manimala Devi. In 1953, he was admitted into Calcutta Medical College. In 1960, he completed his M.B.B.S. and became a physician. He worked in Civil Defence and later joined Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He was involved with amateur theatre under the tutelage of Jnanesh Mukherjee, a stalwart of Bengali theatre and films, and started trying his luck on the silver screen. He was involved with the IPTA. Bikash Roy
Bikash Roy (16 May 1916 – 16 April 1987) was an Indian actor and filmmaker who is known for his work in Bengali cinema. He is well known for his character roles and for his own style of acting in Bengali films from the late 1940s until the mid-1980s. Early life and education He was born in Kolkata, but his ancestral home was Madanpur, Nadia, West Bengal, India. Madanpur in the Nadia district. As a member of a rich and aristocratic family, he grew up in liberal surroundings. He first attended Mitra Institution for his matriculation. Samit Bhanja
Samit Bhanja ( bn, শমিত ভঞ্জ; 2 January 1944 – 24 July 2003) was an Indian actor and director known for his work in the Bengali cinema. He joined Rupkar, the theatre group of Sabitabrata Dutta and enacted in several plays in early 1960s. He made his screen debut with Balai Sen's 1965 Bengali film ''Surer Agun''. He is remembered as the male lead, Navin, of the successful Hindi film '' Guddi'', opposite Jaya Bhaduri. In addition to acting in film, he acted in theatre and jatras, and was associated with the Rupkar group theatre. He died in Kolkata at the age of 59. ''Paka Dekha'' is a Bengali comedy drama film directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay and produced by Mohan Mallick based on a story of Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay in the same name. Utpal Dutt
Utpal Dutta () (29 March 1929 – 19 August 1993) was an Indian actor, director, and writer-playwright. He was primarily an actor in Bengali theatre, where he became a pioneering figure in Modern Indian theatre, when he founded the "Little Theatre Group" in 1949. This group enacted many English, Shakespearean and Brecht plays, in a period now known as the "Epic theatre" period, before it immersed itself completely in highly political and radical theatre. His plays became an apt vehicle for the expression of his Marxist ideologies, visible in socio-political plays such as ''Kallol'' (1965), ''Manusher Adhikar'', ''Louha Manob'' (1964), ''Tiner Toloar'' and ''Maha-Bidroha''. Rabi Ghosh
Robi Ghosh ( bn, রবি ঘোষ) (24 November 1931 – 4 February 1997) was an Indian actor known for his work in Bengali cinema. He is known for his comic appeal, though his versatile acting talent brought him success in various kinds of roles. He is probably one of the earliest character actors of Bengali cinema who focused mainly on method acting. Therefore, he was a regular member of Satyajit Ray films over the years. Till date, he is remembered for his comic roles in different movies. Robi Ghosh was a renowned actor in Bengali theatre and TV as well. Tapen Chatterjee
Tapen Chatterjee (3 September 1937 – 24 May 2010) was a Bengali actor from India who played several roles in Satyajit Ray's films, notably as Goopy Gyne in ''Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne'' (1968), and its sequels '' Heerak Rajar Deshe'' (1980) and ''Goopy Bagha Phire Elo'' (1991). Chatterjee died on 24 May 2010 at the age of 72. He was suffering from pulmonary ailments. Career As a qualified engineer, Chatterjee had a job in Rajasthan, following which he came back to Kolkata and joined ''Sandesh'', the Bengali magazine revived by Satyajit Ray. He started his career in the advertisement department of the children's magazine Sandesh.
