The iconic artworks depict a shepherd tending sheep with the evening sun shining through snowy trees. The primary, and largest (117 x 171 cm), version of the composition ''The Shortening Winter's Day is Near a Close'' (Accession Number LL3152), is at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, in Port Sunlight, England. The 82 x 120 cm version of ''The Shortening Winter's Day is Near a Close'' was last sold to a private collector in 2013. Joseph Farquharson
Joseph Farquharson (4 May 1846 – 15 April 1935) was a Scottish painter, chiefly of landscapes in Scotland often including animals. He is most famous for his snowy winter landscapes, often featuring sheep and often depicting dawn or dusk. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and died at Finzean, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Nicknames include "'Frozen Mutton' Farquharson" and "The Painting Laird". Background and early life Joseph Farquharson combined a long and prolific career as a painter with his inherited role as a Scottish laird. The first permanent settlements and farming date from the Neolithic period, from around 6,000 years ago. Sir Angus Dune Miller Farquharson of Finzean (27 March 1935 – 10 January 2018) was Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire from 1998 to 2010. Career He was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire in 1984 and as Vice Lord-Lieutenant in 1987. He became a Commander of the Order of St John in 2009 having been an Officer of the Order since 2002. He was awarded the honour of OBE in 1995 for services to forestry and the community in Aberdeenshire and upon his retirement as Lord-Lieutenant in 2010, was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Finzean
Finzean (; gd, Fìnnean) is a rural community, electoral polling district, community council area and former ecclesiastical parish, which forms the southern part of the Parish of Birse, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Finzean was the subject of many well-known landscape paintings by the artist Joseph Farquharson, whose family have owned Finzean Estate (which occupies the eastern half of Finzean) since the 17th century. Finzean extends to approximately 8000 hectares in area and had a population of approximately 270 in 2002. Toponymy Finzean is pronounced /ˈfɪŋən/.
