Bendik Hofseth
Bendik Hofseth (born 19 October 1962, in Oslo) is a Norwegian jazz musician, who plays the saxophone and sings. He is also a bandleader, and arranges and composes music. Career When Bendik Hofseth went to New York in 1987, and replaced the world-famous saxophonist Michael Brecker in the band Steps Ahead, it probably came as a surprise to many. A youngster from Lørenskog, Norway in the jazz capital of New York, lining up for one of the most renowned jazz bands in US. Along with Steps Ahead, he has toured worldwide several times since 1987. Hofseth has released seven albums under his own name and has through the years received numerous awards and honors for them. He has also worked as a record producer for among others Jan Eggum and Kenneth Sivertsen. In addition, he has composed numerous commissioned works, film music and founded a chamber music festival in Fredrikstad. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Agder University College
The University of Agder ( no, Universitetet i Agder), formerly known as Agder College and Agder University College, is a public university with campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad, Norway. The institution was established as a university college (''høgskole'') in 1994 through the merger of the Agder University College and five other colleges, including a technical college and a nursing school, and was granted the status of a full university in 2007. Christina Bjordal
Christina Elisabeth Nesse Bjordal (born 25 September 1980 in Haugesund, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz singer. Career Bjordal let out her debut album ''Where Dreams Begin'', within Christina Bjordal Band in 2003. Two years later she signed up with Universal Music, which resulted in a new solo album ''Brighter Days'' (2006). On the latest solo release ''Warrior of Light'' (2009) Bjordal is joined by a cream team of musicians, among them Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Petter Molvær, Mathias Eick, Bendik Hofseth and Nils-Olav Johansen. During the last couple of years she has established her name in the Norwegian vocal jazz genre. They were granted great reviews. She puts her heart into the album with her own lyrics and melodies. Edvard Hoem
Edvard Hoem (born 10 March 1949) is a Norwegian novelist, dramatist, lyricist, psalmist and government scholar. He made his literary debut in 1969, with the poetry collection ''Som grønne musikantar''. He was awarded the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature in 1974 for the novel ''Kjærleikens ferjereiser''. He was awarded the Melsom Prize in 2006, and the ''Peter Dass Prize'' in 2007 for the novel ''Mors og fars historie''. He received the ''Ibsen Prize'' in 2008 for the play ''Mikal Hetles siste ord''. Several of his books (''Kjærleikens ferjereiser'' (1974), ''Prøvetid'' (1984), ''Ave Eva'' (1987), ''Mors og fars historie'' (2005)) have been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize, but did not win this award. Ragnar Bjerkreim
Ragnar Bjerkreim (born 19 April 1958) is Norwegian composer with film scores as his specialty. Bjerkreim was born in Bjerkreim, and has a master's degree in music from University of Oslo; his thesis was entitled "The Function of Film Music". Jan Bang
Jan Bang (born 21 August 1968) is a Norwegian musician and record producer who has worked with Morten Harket, Sidsel Endresen, David Sylvian, Nils Petter Molvær, Arild Andersen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Arve Henriksen, and Erik Honoré. (in Norwegian) Career Bang played with Erik Honoré in "Woodlands" ( EP, 1988), and they have released two albums (2000, 2001). Rebekka Bakken (born April 4, 1970 in Lier, near Oslo) is a Norwegian singer, songwriter and music producer who is often associated with jazz, although she refuses to characterise herself as a jazz musician. Her voice reaches over three octaves. Career Bakken began singing in various school bands, before beginning to sing with professional soul, funk and rock bands in 1988. Maj Britt Andersen
Maj Britt Andersen (born 15 November 1956) is a Norwegian singer. Biography She was born in Østre Toten and is a sister of Inger Lise Rypdal. Her album ''Folk er rare'' from 1986 earned her Spellemannprisen. She was singing in the soul group Chipahua in the 1980s. Ab und Zu (established 1987) is a Norwegian jazz band, originally named "Anne Marie Giørtz Quintet" (1982–1987), and presenting music written by Ole Henrik Giørtz. Biography The quintet comprised the siblings Anne-Marie Giørtz (vocals) and Ole Henrik Giørtz (piano), together with Vidar Johansen (saxophone), Audun Kleive (drums) and Olaf Kamfjord (bass). The first record release was ''Breaking out'' (1983), followed by ''Tigers of pain'' (1985), where drummer Audun Kleive was substituted for Finn Sletten. ''Tigers of pain'' was the first album where they present lyrics by Fran Landesman. Anne Grete Preus
Anne Grete Preus (22 May 1957 – 25 August 2019) was a Norwegian rock singer in Norway in the 1980s and 1990s, first as member of the bands Veslefrikk and Can Can and later as a solo act. She released nine solo albums and won the Spellemannprisen multiple times. In 2008 she appeared as a narrator in an Arts Alliance production, id - Identity of the Soul. She contracted liver cancer in 2007. In early 2019 she had to cancel the planned concerts for the summer due to illness. Helge Iberg
Helge Iberg (born 27 March 1954 in Skien, Norway) is a Norwegian contemporary composer. Iberg studied musicology, history of ideas and religious studies at the University of Oslo under the tutorship of composers Olav Anton Thommessen and Ragnar Søderlind. As a composer, Iberg has made the transition from jazz to contemporary orchestral music. Iberg’s works have been commissioned and performed by several of Norway’s major symphony orchestras, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and the Oslo Chamber Music Festival.
