BendBroadband is a cable television and internet provider in the U.S. state of Oregon. Based in Bend, it serves Central Oregon and also owns several television stations and a data center. As of September 2014, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. YSE: TDS a Fortune 500 company. History The company was founded as Bend TV Cable in 1955. Don Ries and Fred Hartman worked to start the company that started with three channels and charged $3.69 per month. Donald Tykeson bought the company in 1983. In 1997, the company, then known as Bend Cable Communications Inc., started providing internet service. It announced in 1998 it would expand its fiber optic network to Redmond and Sisters. By 2004, the company had moved to the BendBroadband moniker, and that year introduced high-definition video-on-demand to its system utilizing technology from nCUBE. KOHD (channel 18) is a television station in Bend, Oregon, United States, serving as the ABC affiliate for Central Oregon. It is owned by local cable company BendBroadband alongside low-power CBS affiliate KBNZ-LD (channel 7). Both stations share studios on Lower Meadow Drive in Bend, while KOHD's transmitter is located in the city on Awbrey Butte west of US 97. History The station was started by Chambers Communications and signed on as a digital-only station on September 9, 2006; it never broadcast a full-power analog signal prior to the June 12, 2009 analog shutdown for broadcast television stations. KBNZ-LD (channel 7) is a low-power television station in Bend, Oregon, United States, serving Central Oregon as an affiliate of CBS. It is owned by local cable company BendBroadband alongside ABC affiliate KOHD (channel 18). Both stations share studios on Lower Meadow Drive in Bend, while KBNZ-LD's transmitter is located in the city on Awbrey Butte west of US 97. History KBNZ originated in the mid-1980s as a low-powered translator of KOIN in Portland. In October 2008, KOIN owner New Vision Television announced plans to convert KBNZ into a locally-focused CBS affiliate. The station was upgraded to a low-power license under new calls, KBNZ, on June 13, 2008. On October 26, 2008, it relaunched as Central Oregon's first locally-based CBS affiliate. Don Tykeson
Donald Erwin Tykeson (April 11, 1927 – July 12, 2017) was an American businessman and philanthropist. The owner of BendBroadband, he was also a founding board member of C-SPAN. Early life and education The son of O. Ansel Tykeson and Hillie M. Haveman, Don Tykeson was born April 11, 1927, in Portland, Oregon. He was reared on his family's farm near Newberg, Oregon. Tykeson began his education at the Mountain Top one-room school, and he won a statewide Future Farmers of America public speaking contest. He met Rilda M. "Willie" Steigleder, another student at the University of Oregon, and they married in 1950. The couple had three children. At age 30 Tykeson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). In telecommunications, long-term evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless broadband communication for mobile devices and data terminals, based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA standards. It improves on those standards' capacity and speed by using a different radio interface and core network improvements. LTE is the upgrade path for carriers with both GSM/UMTS networks and CDMA2000 networks.
