Benalla Botanical Gardens
The Benalla Botanic Gardens, is a heritage listed botanic garden located in Benalla, Victoria, Australia. The gardens, originally designed by Alfred Sangwell in 1886, was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1995. The gardens include a rose garden established in 1959, which is the focus of the annual Benalla Rose Festival. Amongst the extensive mature tree collection are 3 specimens of ''Ulmus x viminalis The field elm cultivar ''Ulmus minor'' 'Viminalis' (:'willow-like'), occasionally referred to as the twiggy field elm, was raised by Masters in 1817, and listed in 1831 as ''U. campestris viminalis'', without description. Loudon added a gene ...'' which are the only specimens of this particular elm cultivar in Australia and are listed on the National Trust of Australia's significant tree register. Ulmus X Viminalis
The field elm cultivar ''Ulmus minor'' 'Viminalis' (:'willow-like'), occasionally referred to as the twiggy field elm, was raised by Masters in 1817, and listed in 1831 as ''U. campestris viminalis'', without description. Loudon added a general description in 1838, and the Cambridge University Herbarium acquired a leaf specimen of the tree in 1866. Moss, writing in 1912, said that the ''Ulmus campestris viminalis'' from Cambridge University Herbarium was the only elm he thought agreed with the original Plot's elm (not ''U. minor'' 'Plotii') as illustrated by Dr. Plot in 1677 from specimens growing in an avenue and coppice at Hanwell near Banbury. Elwes and Henry (1913) also considered Loudon's ''Ulmus campestris viminalis'' to be Dr Plot's elm. Its 19th-century name, ''U. campestris'' var. Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first sighted by Europeans during an expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and was noted as an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". Rural City Of Benalla
The Rural City of Benalla is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 14,024. It includes the towns of Baddaginnie, Benalla, Devenish, Goorambat, Major Plains, Swanpool, Tatong, Thoona, Warrenbayne and Winton. It was formed in 2002 from the de-amalgamation of the Shire of Delatite into the current rural city and the Shire of Mansfield, the former being a merger between the latter, the Shire of Benalla and the City of Benalla. The Rural City is governed and administered by the Benalla Rural City Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Benalla. The Register of the National Estate was a heritage register that listed natural and cultural heritage places in Australia that was closed in 2007. Phasing out began in 2003, when the Australian National Heritage List and the Commonwealth Heritage List were created and by 2007 the Register had been replaced by these and various state and territory heritage registers. Places listed on the Register remain in a non-statutory archive and are still able to be viewed via the National Heritage Database.
