Benalla Art Gallery is a public art gallery in the regional town of Benalla, Victoria, Australia. The Benalla Art Gallery is a free, public gallery in Benalla, which opened in 1975. Victoria's ''Herald Sun'' newspaper described it in 2013 as one of Victoria's top ten regional galleries, with a "striking modernist building". The gallery complex was designed by Colin Munro and Philip Sargeant. The gallery's original design was reduced in size, culminating in an expansion proposal being canvassed in 2013. In 2013 a new art prize was announced for a work of the naked human figure. The winner of the non-acquisitive $50,000 2014 Benalla Nude Art Prize for 2014 was Juan Davila. Benalla
Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first sighted by Europeans during an expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and was noted as an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". Juan Davila (artist)
Juan Davila (born 1946, Santiago, Chile) is a Chilean-Australian artist and writer who migrated to Melbourne, Australia, in 1974. He is represented in major collections throughout Australia, as well as New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Tate (London) and the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo in Spain. His works are often controversial, and in 2019 the Australian Christian Lobby called for one of his pictures to be removed from Griffith University Art Museum in Brisbane, which was part of an exhibition called ''The Abyss''. The artwork ''Holy Family,'' depicts Mary cradling a giant penis, in the style of the famous Michelangelo sculpture ''The Pieta.'' Constance Stokes
Constance Stokes (née Parkin, 22 February 1906 – 14 July 1991) was an Australian modernist painter who worked in Victoria. She trained at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School until 1929, winning a scholarship to continue her study at London's Royal Academy of Arts. Although Stokes painted few works in the 1930s, her paintings and drawings were exhibited from the 1940s onwards. She was one of only two women, and two Victorians, included in a major exhibition of twelve Australian artists that travelled to Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy in the early 1950s. Influenced by George Bell, Stokes was part of the Melbourne Contemporary Artists, a group Bell established in 1940. Jan Hendrik Scheltema
Jan Hendrik Scheltema (23 August 1861, in The Hague – 9 December 1941, in Brisbane), was a Dutch and later Australian painter who had a prolific, often strenuous, and arguably impressive career in Australia considering he was a non-British migrant artist without an international reputation on arrival. After working as a portrait painter in the Netherlands, he specialized in Australia as a livestock and landscape painter, making the livestock genre, particularly the foreground cattle genre, popular there. In Australia, he painted mainly in Victoria when living in Melbourne for almost 5 decades, even through its land boom depression of the 1890's, World War I and the Great Depression, where he also practiced as a painting and drawing teacher.
