Ben Shenton
Ben Shenton is a politician active in Jersey. He is also the son of the politician and former Senator Dick Shenton. He was born in Saint Helier in 1960, the third of four children and educated at De La Salle College. He lives in Grouville, Jersey. Electoral history Shenton entered the States of Jersey at the first attempt. He was elected as a Senator in the 2005 elections, coming second after Senator Stuart Syvret, with 14,025 votes. On 19 September 2007 he defeated the Chief Minister's nominated candidate to become Minister for Health and Social Services. He appointed Senator Jim Perchard as Assistant Minister with special responsibility for social services. As Health and Social Services Minister he represented Jersey at the British-Irish Council Summit held in Dublin on 14 February 2008. Senator (Jersey)
The States Assembly (french: Assemblée des États; Jèrriais: ) is the parliament of Jersey, formed of the island's 37 deputies and the Connétable of each of the twelve parishes. The origins of the legislature of Jersey lie in the system of self-government according to Norman law guaranteed to the Channel Islands by John, King of England, following the division of Normandy in 1204. The States Assembly has exercised uncontested legislative powers since 1771, when the concurrent law-making power of the Royal Court of Jersey was abolished. Richard Shenton
Richard Joseph "Dick" Shenton (25 October 1926 – 2 January 2013), born in St. Helier, was a politician in Jersey. He retired in 2005. Biography Richard Joseph Shenton the son of Benjamin Henry Shenton, B.E.M. and Kathleen Mary Troy. The third of seven children, he was educated at De La Salle College in Jersey. He and his family lived in Jersey throughout the five years (1940-1945) occupation by the Germans. His father was imprisoned by the occupying forces in 1944, and sadly in 1942 and 1943 his elder brother and sister died in their teens of malnutrition and tuberculosis. Following the liberation of the Channel Islands, he joined the Royal Air Force, serving in the Middle East and Italy until he was demobilised in 1948. After a period of working in the dock industry he met and married Jill Mason and they emigrated to Canada in 1954. Saint Helier
St Helier (; Jèrriais: ; french: Saint-Hélier) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. St Helier has a population of 35,822 – over one-third of the total population of Jersey – and is the Capital city, capital of the island. De La Salle College, Jersey
De La Salle College in Jersey is a private independent Catholic all-boys school taking its name from St. John Baptist de La Salle (1651–1719), who founded the De La Salle Brothers in France. History De La Salle College takes its name from St. John Baptist de La Salle (1651–1719), who founded the Brothers' Order in the time of Louis XIV. Today the Order has establishments in over 80 countries. A few Brothers settled in Jersey at the time of the French Revolution and remained on the Island for several years. Then, from 1866 to 1896, a school of up to 300 pupils run by the Brothers' flourished in St. Thomas's Parish. The Brothers left the Island in 1896, but were invited to return in 1917 to found another school. Stuart Syvret
Stuart Syvret is a former Jersey politician. He held elected office as a member of the States of Jersey assembly from 1990 to 2010. From 1999 to 2007, Svyret had executive responsibilities first as President of the Health and Social Services Committee and, after the 2005 constitutional reforms, as Minister for Health and Social Services in the Council of Ministers. He was dismissed from ministerial office in September 2007 and returned to the backbenches until he was disqualified from membership of the States in April 2010 due to his absence from the island. He has been involved in a series of legal proceedings, as a defendant in a criminal prosecution in Jersey and as a claimant in judicial review and civil claims in Jersey and London. The ''Jersey Evening Post'' (''JEP'') is a local newspaper published six days a week in the Bailiwick of Jersey. It was printed in broadsheet format for 87 years, though it is now of compact ( tabloid) size. Its strapline is: "At the heart of island life". History 1890 to 1945 The ''Evening Post'' was founded in 1890 by H.P. Butterworth, with the very first issue published 30 June 1890. It was acquired only a few weeks after its launch by Walter Guiton, whose business printed it. The ''Post'' was produced sheet by sheet on a flatbed press until 1926, when Guiton oversaw the introduction and operation of the first rotary press.
