Belmont, New South Wales
Belmont is a suburb in Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie and is part of the City of Lake Macquarie council. Belmont is situated on a sandy peninsula formed by the Tasman Sea on the east and Lake Macquarie. History The area around Belmont was inhabited by the Awabakal tribe of Aborigines. In 1825 Reverend Lancelot Edward Threlkeld established a mission at Belmont. He established small scale farming of wheat and ''Indian Corn'' and employed the local Aboriginal people to help him. While doing so, Threlkeld recorded phoenetically the language of the Awabakal and produced the first serious works on Aboriginal language, its grammar, usage, and relation to other Aboriginal tribal languages. Belmont Hospital
Belmont Hospital is an acute care public hospital servicing the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1968, it is the only public hospital in the Local Government Area and is located on Croudace Bay Road in the suburb of Belmont. The hospital is operated by the Hunter New England Local Health District. The hospital underwent a major $31.5 million redevelopment between 2003 and 2007 allowing it to expand the range of specialist services available. Services The hospital's 24-hour emergency department was rebuilt in 2003 and is able to cater for adults and children. Despite this there are no specialist paediatric services located at the hospital, requiring that children be transferred to the John Hunter Children's Hospital should they be admitted. The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. Belmont Railway Line, New South Wales
The Belmont railway line () is an abandoned coal haulage and passenger rail line from Adamstown, New South Wales to Belmont, New South Wales. This was a private railway, being the property of the New Redhead Estate and Coal Company and was generally known as the Belmont Branch. The line closed in December 1991. It has since been converted into a cycleway or rail trail - The Fernleigh Track. The Redhead Coal Mining Company In 1881, the Redhead Coal Mining Company Limited obtained rights over of coal bearing lands lying near the headland of that name, and by 1883 had expended some £25,000 in sinking a shaft, installing machinery, and other improvements. Lake Macquarie Yacht Club (LMYC) is a yacht club located on Ada Street, Belmont, New South Wales, Australia. Lancelot Edward Threlkeld
Lancelot Edward Threlkeld (20 October 1788 – 10 October 1859) was an English missionary, primarily based in Australia. He was married twice and survived by sons and daughters from both marriages. Thelkeld is known for his work with Biraban in recording and publishing English translations of the Awabakal language. Early life Born in Southwark, England, now in south London, on 20 October 1788, Threlkeld was son of Samuel Joseph Threlkeld, a brush-maker, and his wife Mary. In 1813 he began training as an evangelical missionary with the London Missionary Society (LMS). His missionary career began in 1814, with an assignment to the Society Islands. Missionary life Evangelist Threlkeld was well educated, and on 8 November 1815 sailed for Tahiti, but the illness and subsequent death of a child of his detained him for a year in Rio de Janeiro, where he started a Protestant church.
