Bellman's Cave
Bellman's Cave is a cave in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It is named after Captain William Bellman who was stationed in Gibraltar during the Second World War. Its entrance is located on Signal Station Road in the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, directly beneath the top Cable Car station. The tunnel contains the remains of accommodation that was installed for the gunners of the Signal Hill Battery. The tunnel which runs from east to west contains a hollowed out interior which is six by twelve metres. Within this space are the remains of a Nissen hut. Signal Station Road
Signal Station Road is a road in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It leads down from the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, and skirts the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Description The road takes its name from an old signal station built by the British on the clifftop. A footpath known as either Green's Lodge Road or Green's Lodge footpath leads out through a break in the (former) high-voltage fencing on one side of the road. This footpath leads to Green's Lodge Battery. The boundary fencing still has signs in English, Spanish and Arabic warning people of the high-voltage fencing and not to enter the restricted Ministry of Defence area. Actually the land was given to the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society in 2005 and is not restricted or the fence electrified, although the area at the top of the rock which carries radio antennae is still restricted. Gibraltar Nature Reserve
The Gibraltar Nature Reserve (formerly the Upper Rock Nature Reserve) is a protected nature reserve in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar that covers over 40% of the country's land area. It was established as the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in 1993 under the International Union for Conservation of Nature's category Ia ( strict nature reserve) and was last extended in 2013. It is known for its semi-wild population of Barbary macaques, and is an important resting point for migrating birds. Location Originally named the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, it was limited to the upper part of the Rock of Gibraltar, a long and narrow limestone peninsula that rises to a height of above sea level. Gibraltar Cable Car
Gibraltar Cable Car ( es, Teleférico de Gibraltar) is an aerial tramway in Gibraltar. The base station of the cable car is located near the southern end of Main Street, next to Alameda Gardens. History The Gibraltar Cable Car was built in 1966 by Swiss cable car experts Von Roll Holding, with the base and summit stations designed by architect Brian Helliwell and atop Signal Hill Battery. The battery was located alongside a Signal Station and was equipped with two 3-inch 30-cwt anti-aircraft guns and a 40-mm Bofors gun during World War II. Remains of an earlier cable station that was used to bring supplies (or a brave man) up to the top of signal hill via a rope are still evident. Signal Hill Battery, Gibraltar
Signal Hill Battery or Signal Battery was an artillery battery in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The battery was mounted high on the rock. Little remains today as the Gibraltar Cable Car top station was built on the site of the old battery. History The top of the Rock of Gibraltar is a natural site for a signal station and the high Signal Hill has had a Signal Station since at least 1727. In 1773 it had its first 6-pounder gun installed. The height above sea level gave the gun extra range and it could also fire in any direction. However, in Gibraltar height can be a disadvantage as the levanter cloud can interfere with the gunners view of targets. By 1892 the gun had been updated to a BL 6 inch QF gun mounted on a Vavasseur mounting.
