Belle Plaine is a French name meaning "beautiful plain". In 1883, Belle Plaine was a station and shipping point for the Southern Central & Fort Scott Railway. By 1910, it was at the junction of two railroads, the Missouri Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. The first post office in Belle Plaine was established in April 1871. Belle Plaine is a city in Scott County, Minnesota, United States, about 40 minutes southwest of Minneapolis. The population was 7,395 at the 2020 census. History Minnesota Territorial Supreme Court Judge Andrew G. Chatfield selected the townsite of Belle Plaine in 1853 while traveling from Mendota to Traverse des Sioux to hold court, as it was a halfway marker on his usual path of travel. Judge Chatfield chose to name the townsite ''Belle Plaine,'' which is French for "Beautiful Prairie." From 1868 to 1974, Belle Plaine was incorporated as a borough, the only one in Minnesota. Belle Plaine is a historic farm property at 2488 South United States Route 15 in rural Madison County, Virginia, south of Locust Dale. The main farmhouse is a five-bay two-story frame structure attached to a somewhat older log structure, finished like the main block in wooden clapboards.
