Belle K. Maniates
Belle K. Maniates (September 1861 – November 13, 1931) was an American novelist and short story writer. At least three silent films were made based on works by Maniates: '' Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley'' (1918), '' Mirandy Smiles'' (1918), and '' Penny of Top Hill Trail'' (1921). Early life Belle Kanaris Maniates was born in Marshall, Michigan, in 1861. Her father Nicholas Kanaris Maniates was a Greek immigrant and a doctor. Her mother was Martha Arabelle Becker Maniates, of New York. Her father died in the same year that Belle Maniates was born. She was sometimes described as the niece or grandniece of Greek politician Konstantinos Kanaris. Career Maniates, who worked as a secretary and clerk in the Michigan state government in Lansing, wrote "eight novels and hundreds of short stories". ''Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley'' is a 1918 American silent romantic comedy film starring Mary Pickford that was directed by Marshall Neilan and written by Frances Marion based upon a novel by Belle K. Maniates. Plot Set in San Francisco during the early 1900s, the film revolves around Amarilly (Mary Pickford), the daughter of a widowed scrubwoman. Amarilly is proud of her hard-working Irish family, and takes care of her five roughhouse brothers. She is engaged to bartender Terry McGowan ( William Scott), who gets her a job as a cigarette girl in his cafe after a fire unfairly causes her to lose her job as a theater scrubwoman. While working as a cigarette girl, she meets Gordon Phillips (Norman Kerry), a handsome and wealthy but frivolous young man, who is a society sculptor. Vivian Martin
Vivian Martin (July 22, 1893 – March 16, 1987) was an American stage and silent film actress. Biography Martin was born in Sparta, Michigan and began her career as a child actress on the stage with comedian Lew Fields. Her early theatrical appearances included ''Stop Thief'', ''Officer 666'', ''The Only Son'' and with Richard Mansfield in ''Cyrano de Bergerac''. A winsome and pretty blonde, Martin entered the motion picture industry in 1914. Her first role was in ''The Wishing Ring: An Idyll of Old England'' (1914) for the World Film Company, in which she played Sally, a parson's daughter. Martin subsequently became a contract player for the Famous Players Film Company, where she achieved popularity as a rival to Mary Pickford. Beatrice Van (born Beatrice Abbott; August 8, 1890 – July 4, 1983) was an American silent film actress. She was also a screenwriter for both silent and sound films. Biography Beatrice was born to Joseph and Beatrice Abbott in Omaha, Nebraska; she had an older sister, Genevieve. She grew up in Nebraska and Oklahoma, where she was educated in a convent. Beatrice's first marriage was to Cornelius Vander-Pluym; they had one child together, Kreigh Vander-Pluym, in 1912. The pair eventually divorced in 1915. She was a leading woman at Universal for a time in the 1910s, and later worked as a scenarist for FBO. ''Mirandy Smiles'' is a 1918 American silent film, silent drama film directed by William C. deMille and written by Edith Kennedy based upon a short story by Belle K. Maniates. The film stars Vivian Martin, Douglas MacLean, William Freeman, and Frances Beech. The film was released on December 15, 1918, by Paramount Pictures. It is not known whether the film currently survives, which suggests that it is a lost film. Plot As described in a film magazine, Mirandy's mother Mrs. Judkins (Kelso) "takes in" laundry and Mirandy Judkins (Martin) scrubs the floors of the town opera house.
