Television in Belgium was introduced in 1953 and began with one channel each in Dutch and French. The country is heavily cabled, with 93% of households watching television through cable as of 2003. They constitute separate markets, the common feature of which is the fact that they have been extensively cabled for three decades and are thus able to receive neighbouring countries' channels. VTM (TV Channel)
VTM or Vlaamse Televisie Maatschappij (English: ''Flemish Television Company'') is the main commercial television station in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking northern region of Belgium) and forms part of a network of channels owned by DPG Media (formerly Medialaan). It was launched on February 1, 1989 as the second commercial television channel in Belgium after the French-speaking RTL-TVI, and quickly became the most popular TV channel in the Flemish part of Belgium. Early programming consisted of local versions of game shows like 'Rad Van Fortuin' (Wheel of Fortune) or 'Waagstuk!' (Jeopardy!). Play Sports (formerly Prime Sport (2005-2012) and Sporting Telenet (2012-2015) is a brand of the Flemish cable distributor Telenet, which consists of a bundle of different (partly own) channels. Through television stations, competitions from various European football competitions, including The Belgian Jupiler Pro League. In addition, Play Sports includes American NBA Basketball, American Football and Golf. In March 2014, it also acquired rights to broadcast Formula 1 until 2019. In July 2015, the name changed From Sporting Telenet to Play Sports. ''Play More'' is a Belgian premium television service owned by Telenet, the Belgian content division of Liberty Global. Prime launched together with its sister service Prime Sport (later Sporting Telenet and now Play Sports) on September 3, 2005 and replaced the Canal+ Flanders television channels. The service offers multiple film channels with Belgian and international productions many of which are television premières. The service launched with five channels and a timeshift version of the main channel. Starting March 2015, all channels are broadcast exclusively in HD, the timeshift version PRIME Star +1 has thus been closed down. The channels are only available on Telenet and its Yelo Play service with the Play More package. Telenet
Telenet was an American commercial packet-switched network which went into service in 1975. It was the first FCC-licensed public data network in the United States. Various commercial and government interests paid monthly fees for dedicated lines connecting their computers and local networks to this backbone network. Free public dialup access to Telenet, for those who wished to access these systems, was provided in hundreds of cities throughout the United States. The original founding company, Telenet Inc., was established by Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) and recruited Larry Roberts (former head of the ARPANet) as President of the company, and Barry Wessler. GTE acquired Telenet in 1979. It was later acquired by Sprint and called "Sprintnet". Play6 is a Belgian commercial television channel for Flemish public which started broadcasting on 6 October 2016. It is part of SBS Belgium. The channel is a sister channel of Play4 and Play5. ZES focuses on older, successful series, movies and sitcoms. Most of them are of American origin. Furthermore, the channel is the first Flemish one to focus on the broadcast of series with all episodes of one or more seasons directly after each other. Play5 started in October 2004 as SBS Belgium's second channel and a sister channel to VIER (formerly VT4). History On 1 October 2004, the first broadcast was that of a soccer game, even though women are the channel's target audience. By doing that the station made sure that men also would set their TV up to view VIJF. In 2005, its first full year of operation, VIJFtv gained a 5% market share in Flanders, almost matching Kanaaltwee (now 2BE) and VT4. In January 2006, VIJFtv doubled its programming hours and began broadcasting 24 hours every day. VIJFtv began broadcasting the American daytime soap opera ''The Bold and the Beautiful'' (in Dutch ''Mooi en Meedogenloos'') on 4 January 2006. Play4 is a Belgian-Flemish commercial television channel. It is part of SBS Belgium and production company Woestijnvis. As of 2010, the channel has a market share of more than 7%. The channel was formerly known as VIER from 17 September 2012 to 27 January 2021. On 28 January 2021, the channel was rebranded to Play4.
