Belgian Open Championships
The Belgian Open Championships and originally known as the Belgian International Championships and Belgian Championships was a men's tennis tournament played in Brussels, Belgium. History Originally called the Belgian International Championships established in 1899 continued for 72 editions until 1981. The championships were not staged during World War I or World War II. The event was part of the amateur men's and women's tour from 1899 until 1967 It continued in to the open era in 1968 when it was rebranded as the Belgian Open Championships until 1970 when it was part of the ITF independent tournament tour. In 1971 as part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit from 1971 to 1972 and then from 1977 to 1981 when the tournament was known as the Belgian Open. It was played on outdoor clay. Ricardo Ycaza
Ricardo Ycaza (born 16 February 1958) is an Ecuadorian tennis player who was a world top 10 junior, a Davis Cup stalwart, and a world top 100 touring professional. Tennis career His most noteworthy achievement was winning the 1976 US Open Junior tournament. In the semi-finals of that tournament he staged a third-set comeback to defeat John McEnroe after saving two match points at 2–5 in the third set and after coming back from 2–4 in the third-set tiebreaker. (Ycaza was to face McEnroe three more times in junior tournaments, winning each time.) In the final, Ycaza defeated José Luis Clerc of Argentina. In May 1977, Ycaza again defeated John McEnroe in three sets to win the World Championship of Tennis Men's 21-and-under tournament in Houston, Texas. Marko Ostoja
Marko Ostoja (born 20 October 1960) is a former professional tennis player from Croatia who competed for Yugoslavia. Career Ostoja was the Yugoslavian National Champion in 1978, having earlier won the event as a junior, in the 14s, 16 and 18s age groups. He had his best year on tour in 1981 when he won his first career title at Brussels and reached the doubles finals of the Austrian Open. The Croatian also reached the semi-finals in Stowe, Vermont, that year. In 1982 he made the third round of the 1982 French Open, with wins over José Luis Damiani and Gilles Moretton. His best tournament showing came in Florence, where he was a semi-finalist. Peter McNamara
Peter McNamara (5 July 1955 – 20 July 2019) was an Australian tennis player and coach. McNamara won five singles titles and nineteen doubles titles in his career. A right-hander, McNamara reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on 14 March 1983 when he became world No. 7. McNamara and fellow Australian Paul McNamee won the 1980 and 1982 men's doubles championship at Wimbledon and the Australian Open doubles in 1979. McNamara's highest rank in doubles was No. 3. Ivan Lendl
Ivan Lendl (; born March 7, 1960) is a Czech–American former professional tennis player. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Lendl was ranked world No. 1 in singles for 270 weeks and won 94 singles titles. He won eight major singles titles and was runner-up a joint record 11 times (tied with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic), making him the first man to contest 19 major finals. Balázs Taróczy
Balázs Taróczy ( hu, Taróczy Balázs; born 9 May 1954) is a retired tennis player from Hungary. The right-hander won 13 singles titles in his career, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 in April 1982. Tennis career Taróczy was six times a Hungarian national champion. One of the game's premier doubles players, Balazs and partner Heinz Günthardt won the 1985 Wimbledon doubles title. Werner Zirngibl
Werner Zirngibl (born 4 September 1956) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. Biography A right-handed player, Zirngibl won his first Grand Slam match at the January edition of the 1977 Australian Open, then had to retire during his second round match against Dick Crealy. He managed to win the Belgium International Tennis Championships in 1978 as a qualifier. Following an upset win against top seed Adriano Panatta in the semi-finals, he had a four-set win over Ricardo Cano in the final. The tournament, held on outdoor clay courts in Brussels, was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit. This was the first occasion a qualifier had gone on to win a Grand Prix tournament.
