Beira Interior DOC
Beira Interior is a Portuguese wine '' Denominação de Origem Controlada'' (DOC) located in central Portugal in the Beiras VR wine region. It was created in 2005 when three '' Indicação de Proveniencia Regulamentada'' (IPR) regions were put together into one DOC. Subregions Beira Interior has three subregions, which may be indicated on wine labels together with the name Beira Interior.List of quality wines produced in specified regions in the European Union

Portuguese Wine
Portuguese wine was mostly introduced by the Romans and other ancient Mediterranean peoples who traded with local coastal populations, mainly in the South. In pre-Roman Gallaecia-Lusitania times, the native peoples only drank beer and were unfamiliar with wine production. Portugal started to export its wines to Rome during the Roman Empire. Modern exports developed with trade to England after the Methuen Treaty in 1703. From this commerce a wide variety of wines started to be grown in Portugal. And, in 1758, one of the first wine-producing regions of the world, the '' Região Demarcada do Douro'' was created under the orientation of Marquis of Pombal, in the Douro Valley. Portugal has two wine-producing regions protected by UNESCO as World Heritage: the Douro Valley Wine Region (''Douro Vinhateiro'') and Pico Island Wine Region (''Ilha do Pico Vinhateira''). Beiras is a Portuguese wine region producing wines with the classification '' Denominação de Origem Controlada''. Jancis Mary Robinson OBE, ComMA, MW (born 22 April 1950) is a British wine critic, journalist and wine writer. She currently writes a weekly column for the ''Financial Times'', and writes for her website JancisRobinson.com, updated daily. She provided advice for the wine cellar of Queen Elizabeth II. Early life and education Robinson was born in Carlisle, Cumbria, studied mathematics and philosophy at St Anne's College, University of Oxford, and worked for a travel company after leaving university; according to her website, she worked in marketing for Thomson Holidays. Career Robinson started her wine writing career on 1 December 1975 when she became assistant editor for the trade magazine '' Wine & Spirit''. ''The Oxford Companion to Wine'' (''OCW'') is a book in the series of Oxford Companions published by Oxford University Press. The book provides an alphabetically arranged reference to wine, compiled and edited by Jancis Robinson, with contributions by several wine writers including Hugh Johnson, Michael Broadbent, and James Halliday, and experts such as viticulturist Richard Smart and oenologist Pascal Ribéreau-Gayon. Cova da Beira is a Portuguese wine region centered on the Cova da Beira region between the Dão and Vinho Verde DOCs in the wider Beiras VR wine region. Cova da Beira was initially a separate '' Indicação de Proveniencia Regulamentada'' (IPR) region (and was the largest IPR in Portugal in terms of land planted with vines), but in 2005, it became one of three subregions of the Beira Interior DOC, which has the higher '' Denominação de Origem Controlada'' (DOC) status.
