Behind The Painting
''Khang Lang Phap'' ( th, ข้างหลังภาพ), translated into English as ''Behind the Painting'', is a Thai romantic novel by Kulap Saipradit (writing under the pen name Siburapha), published in 1937. It tells the story of Nopphon, a Thai student studying in Japan, who meets and develops a relationship with the aristocratic lady Mom Rajawongse Kirati, the newly married wife of a family acquaintance. Nopphon and Kirati develop romantic feelings which they are unable to acknowledge, leading to tensions as the characters face the conflict between their feelings and familial duties. The work has come to be regarded as one of the foremost classic novels of the Thai literary canon. It has been reprinted almost forty times, is commonly listed as required reading for secondary school students, and has been adapted into two films (by Piak Poster in 1985 and Cherd Songsri in 2001) and three stage musicals. Kulap Saipradit
Kulap Saipradit ( th, กุหลาบ สายประดิษฐ์; 31 March 1905 – 16 June 1974), better known by the pen name Siburapha ( th, link=no, ศรีบูรพา; also romanized as Sriburapha or Sri Burapha), was a newspaper editor and one of the foremost Thai novelists of his time. He was a vocal activist for human rights and because of this, he ran afoul of the authorities and was jailed for more than four years. He spent the last 16 years of his life in exile in China. Biography Education and early career Born in Bangkok, Kulap studied at Debsirin, a school for students from wealthier families. Kulap himself did not come from a wealthy family. His father died when he was very young, and his mother, a dressmaker, and sister, a classical dancer, worked hard to fund his education. In 1928, he wrote three novels. Cherd Songsri (Thai alphabet, Thai: เชิด ทรงศรี, September 20, 1931 – May 21, 2006) was a Thai film director, screenwriter and film producer. A maker of period films that sought to introduce international audiences to his vision of Culture of Thailand, Thai culture, his best-known work is the 1977 in film, 1977 romance film ''Plae Kao'' (''The Scar''), which earned more box-office receipts than any Thai film before it. It won a prize at the 1981 Three Continents Festival in Nantes, France. Biography Cherd was born in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. He was trained as a maker of ''nang talung'' shadow puppets, which were fashioned out of animal skins. He was also a school teacher in Uttaradit Province and then became an editor of publications for the Express Transportation Organization of Thailand.
