Francis Craig
Francis Craig (September 10, 1900 – November 19, 1966) was an American songwriter, honky tonk piano player, and leader of a Nashville dance band. His works included " Dynamite" and "Near You", the latter being the first Billboard #1 hit out of Nashville. Early years A Methodist minister's son, Craig was born in Dickson, Tennessee, United States. He studied mathematics and political science at Vanderbilt University, Nashville. "Dynamite", now the official fight song of Vanderbilt University, was written by Craig in 1938 a week prior to a Vanderbilt/University of Tennessee football game. It is played mainly at football games, basketball games, and at other Commodore sports events. While he was at Vanderbilt, Craig formed an orchestra, the Vanderbilt Jazz Band. "That Lucky Old Sun" (1949) one of his better known works, was covered by many well-known artists. The family moved to Nashville when he was in elementary school. While in high school at Hume-Fogg in downtown Nashville, he formed an instrumental duo with fellow piano prodigy Francis Craig. Frankie Carle (born Francis Nunzio Carlone, March 25, 1903 – March 7, 2001) was an American pianist and bandleader. As a very popular bandleader in the 1940s and 1950s, Carle was nicknamed "The Wizard of the Keyboard". "Sunrise Serenade" was Carle's best-known composition, rising to No. 1 in the US in 1938 and selling more than one million copies. Early life Carle was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 25, 1903. Born the son of a factory worker who could not afford a piano, he practiced on a dummy keyboard devised by his uncle, pianist Nicholas Colangelo, until he found a broken-down instrument in a dance hall. The Dinning Sisters
The Dinning Sisters were an American sisters singing group, active from the late 1930s to 1955. They made a handful of film appearances and had several hit records at the height of their popularity in the late 1940s. The trio originally consisted of Ella Lucille "Lou" Dinning (September 29, 1920 – April 28, 2000), Eugenia Doy "Jean" Dinning (March 29, 1924 – February 22, 2011) and Virginia Moy "Ginger" Dinning (March 29, 1924 – October 14, 2013). Jean and Ginger were twins. Lou Dinning left the group in 1946 to be replaced by Jayne Bundesen. Beginning in 1949, another Dinning sister was added to the lineup, replacing Bundsen: Dolores May "Tootsie" Dinning (January 30, 1929 – June 17, 2015).
