Beers, North Brabant
Beers (Brabants: ''Bèèrs'') is a village in the former Dutch municipality of Cuijk. It is located about 4 km west of Cuijk. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Land van Cuijk. Beers has a population of about 1721: 1305 in the village itself, and 416 in the surrounding countryside, including the hamlets De Plaats and Dommelsvoort. Statistical areas "Beers" and "Verspreide huizen Beers". Until 1994, Beers was a separate municipality. Toponymy The name ''Beers'' might come from ''bere'' or ''baren'', which can mean mud or stuff in Dutch. History Beers is first noted in a document that was written between 1050 and 1200. In it beers was named ''Berse''. The family ''Van Beerse'' was a vassal from the Lord of Cuijk, making Beers belong to the municipality of Cuijk. Linden is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the former municipality of Cuijk, about 10 km south of Nijmegen. History The village was first mentioned in 1308 as "Kerklienden en Linen". It used to be called "Groot Linden" as to distinguish between Klein Linden. Klein Linden was became part of and the name reverted to back to Linden. The tower of the St Lambertus Church dates from the 15th century and the church was later added to the tower. Linden was home to 243 people in 1840. Linden was a separate municipality until 1942, when the territory of the municipality was divided between Cuijk en Sint Agatha and Beers. Gassel is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the former municipality of Grave. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Land van Cuijk. History Gassel was mentioned first in 1485 as Gassel, and means "guesthouse". Gassel probably dates from the Early Middle Ages and developed on a sandy hill. The St John, the Baptist Church was built in 1875 in Gothic Revival style. It was modified in 1888. The castle Tongelaar is located south of Gassel and was first mentioned in 1292 as belonging to the Lords of Cuijk. The south-western tower dates from the 15th century. Around 1771, the other buildings were constructed. Gassel was home to 200 people in 1840. Gassel was a separate municipality since the year 1811 until 1942, when it was merged with Beers. Cuijk
Cuijk (; dialect: ''Kuuk'') is a town in the northeastern part of the province of North Brabant, Netherlands. It is the successor of a Roman settlement on the west bank of the Meuse, 13 km (8 mi) south of Nijmegen. Cuijk, which had a population of 18,170 as of 2020, was the centre of an eponymous municipality, which ceased to exist on 1 January 2022, when it was replaced by the larger Land van Cuijk municipality. Origin of the name The name Cuijk seems to be derived from the Celtic ''Keukja'', meaning curve or bend. This refers to a bend in the Meuse near Cuijk.
