Beech Tree
Beech (''Fagus'') is a genus of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae, native to temperate Europe, Asia, and North America. Recent classifications recognize 10 to 13 species in two distinct subgenera, ''Engleriana'' and ''Fagus''. The ''Engleriana'' subgenus is found only in East Asia, distinctive for its low branches, often made up of several major trunks with yellowish bark. The better known ''Fagus'' subgenus beeches are high-branching with tall, stout trunks and smooth silver-grey bark. The European beech (''Fagus sylvatica'') is the most commonly cultivated. Beeches are monoecious, bearing both male and female flowers on the same plant. The small flowers are unisexual, the female flowers borne in pairs, the male flowers wind-pollinating catkins. Beachwood, Ohio
Beachwood is a city in eastern Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States, and a suburb of Cleveland. As of the 2020 census the city's population was 14,040. History The land that eventually became Beachwood was originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Before becoming an independent municipality, Beachwood was part of Warrensville Township. In 1915, it seceded from Warrensville after the Township voted to close a nearby area school. A petition was organized, and on June 26, 1915, Beachwood was incorporated into an independent village. In 1960, Beachwood had reached the number of residents to attain city status under the Ohio Revised Code. Beachwood was named for the numerous Beech trees that grew throughout the village. The origin of the spelling of the city is disputed. Upon incorporation, the city's name was originally spelled, "Beechwood". The H. G. W. Mayberry House, also known as Beechwood Hall, is a historic antebellum plantation house built in 1856 in Franklin, Tennessee. Plantation house Beechwood Hall was the manor house of one of the three largest plantations in Williamson, prior to the American Civil War. It had more than in area, and had many enslaved people laboring on it. The mansion's original owners were Sophronia Hunter Mayberry and Henry George Washington Mayberry. It includes Greek Revival and Italianate style architectural elements. The other two contenders for Williamson County's largest plantation are those of the Samuel F. Glass House plantation, and the "Ravenswood" plantation (James H. Wilson House), both also NRHP-listed. Beechwood is a Hudson River estate in Scarborough-on-Hudson, in Briarcliff Manor, New York. The estate was most notably the home of Frank A. Vanderlip and his family, and is a contributing property to the Scarborough Historic District. The house and property were owned by the Vanderlip family from 1906 to 1979. The property is now a 37-condominium complex as the result of a development project that began in the 1980s. Contemporarily, Beechwood is known for being a filming location of the 1970 film ''House of Dark Shadows'', and a filming location and the primary setting of '' Savages'', a 1972 Merchant Ivory film. Built in 1868, it is prominent locally as a fine early example of Stick style architecture, and as one of the first houses to be built that became one of the city's upper-class neighborhoods. Beechwood (Astor Mansion)
Beechwood is a Gilded Age mansion and estate located at 580 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island best known for having been owned by the Astor family. Part of the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, it was built between 1852–53 and designed in the Italianate style by Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux. Richard Morris Hunt renovated the estate in 1881 after it was bought the year before by William Backhouse Astor, Jr. History Beechwood was built as a marine villa for New Yorker Daniel Parish, a clothing merchant whose operations extended to Southern cities. Being a nephew of Thomas Powell, a steamboat magnate from Newburgh, New York, Parish commissioned the design from Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux, whose office was based there.
