Beech Street Historic District (Texarkana, Arkansas)
The Beech Street Historic District is a residential historic district northeast of the downtown area of Texarkana, Arkansas. It encompasses an area of homes built primarily in the early decades of the 20th century, on Beech Street between 14th and 24th Streets, with a few houses also included on adjacent Ash Street and County Avenue. The roadway is itself notable as a rare surviving early 20th-century section of a brick-paved road. The area represented a new phase in Texarkana's residential growth, which had previously been focused around the railroad, and quickly became a fashionable area to live. The most predominant architectural style is Craftsman, although revival styles popular in the first half of the 20th century are also well represented. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The Dean House, at 1520 Beech Street, was separately listed in 1976. Texarkana, Arkansas
Texarkana is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas and the county seat of Miller County, on the southwest border of the state. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 29,387. The city is located across the state line from its twin city of Texarkana, Texas. The city was founded at a railroad intersection on December 8, 1873, and was incorporated in Arkansas on August 10, 1880. Texarkana and its Texas counterpart are the principal cities of the Texarkana metropolitan area, which in 2021 was ranked 289th in the United States with a population of 147,174, according to the United States Census Bureau. Within the Ark-La-Tex subregion of southwest Arkansas, Texarkana is located in the Piney Woods, an oak–hickory forest that dominates the flat Gulf Coastal Plain. Witt, Seibert & Halsey was an American architectural firm based in the twin cities of Texarkana, Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas, with a practice extending into Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. It was founded by architect Sidney Stewart, but achieved prominence under Bayard Witt and Eugene C. Seibert. History Bayard Witt was born in 1880 in Witt's Foundry, Tennessee. He worked as a railroad laborer and foreman before obtaining an apprenticeship in civil engineering. In 1904 he moved to Texarkana, Arkansas, joining the office of architect Sidney Stewart,St. John's Episcopal Church NRHP Nomination (2017) who had been practicing in Texarkana since at least 1900. By 1907, Witt was a partner in the firm of Stewart & Witt. Eugene Charles Seibert was born in 1878 in Berea, Ohio. Beech Street Brick Street
The Beech Street Brick Street is an historic section of the Beech Street roadway in Texarkana, Arkansas. It consists of a section of road, between 14th and 24th Streets, which was paved in brick c. 1904. It is a residential road located northeast of Texarkana's downtown, and is about long and wide. The bricks, which measure , are laid in a running bond pattern. The road section is a rare surviving example of the use of brick as a paving material, as most such roads have since been paved over with asphalt. The road section was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It contributes to the historic significance of the Beech Street Historic District, which includes the residential properties on Beech Street and some adjacent roads. Dean House (Texarkana, Arkansas)
The Dean House is a historic house at 1520 Beech Street in Texarkana, Arkansas. It is a two-story wood-frame house, built in 1911 for Thomas Mercer Dean, a local farmer and lumberman. Its principal distinguishing feature is its large Colonial Revival portico, with paired two-story Tuscan columns supporting an elaborate entablature. Porches wrap around the north and east sides of the house, and there is a porte-cochère at the southern corner. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and it was included in the Beech Street Historic District in 2010.
