Harry Crocker
Henry Joseph Crocker II (July 2, 1893 – May 23, 1958) was an American journalist and occasional film actor. Life and career Although Crocker was for most of his career a ''Los Angeles Examiner'' newsman, he also appeared as Rex in Charlie Chaplin's '' The Circus'' in 1928. He was Chaplin's personal assistant until he was fired during the making of Chaplin's '' City Lights'' in 1930. Crocker later reconciled with Chaplin and maintained a friendship until the comedian left America in 1952. Overall, Crocker appeared in 20 films between 1925 and 1952, mostly in small roles or cameo appearances. Claude King (actor)
Claude Ewart King (15 January 1875 – 18 September 1941) was an English-born character actor and unionist, who appeared in American silent film. With his distinctive wavy hair, King appeared on both stage and screen. He served his country, Great Britain, in World War I in Field Artillery, reaching the rank of Major and surviving the war. He began his stage career in his native country, before emigrating to the US. In 1919, he appeared on Broadway in support of Ethel Barrymore in the play ''Declassee''. Film After gravitating to silent films, King had a key role in Tod Browning's lost silent masterpiece '' London After Midnight'' (1927), starring alongside Lon Chaney. Claude King was later an original member of the first Board of Directors of the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) in 1933. Mack Swain
Mack Swain (born Moroni Swain; February 16, 1876 – August 25, 1935) was an early American film actor, who appeared in many of Mack Sennett’s comedies at Keystone Studios, including the Keystone Cops series. He also appeared in major features by Charlie Chaplin. Early years Swain was born on February 16, 1876 to Robert Henry Swain and Mary Ingeborg Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah and was educated in Salt Lake City's public schools. He ran away from home at age 15, joining a minstrel show. His mother took him home after one performance, but he persuaded her to let him continue in entertainment. Career In the early 1900s, Swain had his own stock theater company, which performed in the western and midwestern United States. Swain worked in vaudeville before starting in silent film at Keystone Studios under Mack Sennett. While with Keystone, he was teamed up with Chester Conklin to make a series of comedy films. Gertrude Olmstead
Gertrude Olmstead (November 13, 1897 – January 18, 1975) was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in 56 films between 1920 and 1929. Her last name was sometimes seen as Olmsted. Career Olmstead was born in Chicago, Illinois, and was noticed after winning a 5,900-entrant contest to represent "The Spirit of America" at the 1920 Elks Club national convention. The victory included an opportunity to receive a $10,000 one-year contract to appear in films. Olmstead initially was signed by Universal Motion Picture company. Her first film was '' Tipped Off'' (1920), following which she became the leading lady in western films that starred Hoot Gibson. A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception). Comedy is one of the oldest genres in film and it is derived from the classical comedy in theatre. Some of the earliest silent films were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. When sound films became more prevalent during the 1930s, comedy films took another swing, as laughter could result from burlesque situations but also dialogue. Comedy, compared with other film genres, puts much more focus on individual stars, with many former stand-up comics transitioning to the film industry due to their popularity.
