Becket (1923 Film)
''Becket'' is a 1924 British silent drama film directed by George Ridgwell and starring Frank R. Benson, A.V. Bramble and Bertram Burleigh. It depicts the fatal encounter between Henry II and the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket. The film is based on the 1884 play of the same title by Alfred Tennyson. It was produced by Stoll Pictures, Britain's largest film company of the era, at the Cricklewood Studios in London. The film's sets were designed by the art director Walter Murton. George Ridgwell
George Ridgwell (1867–1935) was a British screenwriter and film director of the silent film era. His name was sometimes spelt as George Ridgewell. He was born in Woolwich in 1867. He directed around 70 films including a series of adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories featuring Eille Norwood as Holmes. His last film was '' Lily of Killarney'' in 1929. He died in Hampstead in 1935. He was the father of the actress Audrey Ridgewell. His early career was as an army musician (sergeant, band of the Coldstream Guards) and on the stage (he created the role of Abdallah in Sullivan's 'Rose of Persia' and was a member of The D'Oyly Carte Touring Opera Company for a season playing lead baritone roles). He also composed light music numbers and lyrics. He was educated at the Royal Military Asylum, later the Duke of York's Royal Military School (a school history is the source of this information. Mary Clare
Mary Clare Absalom (17 July 1892 – 29 August 1970) was a British actress of stage, film and television. Biography Daughter of George Alfred Absalom, Clare was educated at Wood Green secondary school, first worked in an office but a loan of £50 allowed her to train at a dramatic school and she began her thespian career on the London stage at the age of 18 in 1910, following which she spent two years touring the provinces to appear back in London in "A Posy on a Ring" at the Earl's Court Exhibition Theatre. She made her London West End debut in ''Turandot'' at the St James's Theatre in 1913, following which she appeared in many West End productions. In the theatre, she became one of Noël Coward's "leading ladies" appearing in several of his plays, in particular, ''Cavalcade'' in 1931.
