Becconsall
Hesketh Bank is a small agricultural village in Lancashire, England. It lies to the north-east of the town of Southport on the Irish Sea estuary of the River Ribble. The area falls under West Lancashire Borough Council for administrative purposes, and Hesketh-with-Becconsall Parish Council for parochial matters. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 4,041. It is in the South Ribble parliamentary constituency. Etymology ''Hesketh'' was first recorded in 1288 as ''Heschath''. The name is derived either from Old Norse ''hest shei'' meaning "race course", or from a plural of the Welsh ''hesg'', meaning "sedges". History Due to its geographical location, close to the cities of Preston and Liverpool, the village suffered during the Second World War. Stray bombs hit the old church in 1943, and landed along Becconsall Lane, causing extensive damage to the housing there. Becconsall Old Church
Becconsall Old Church is a redundant church in the village of Hesketh Bank, Lancashire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is situated on a lane leading to a boatyard on the River Douglas. History The church was built in 1764 on the site of a former chantry chapel, which had been built in the 16th century as the private chapel of the Becconsall family. The present church cost £90 (equivalent to £),, £60 of which was subscribed by local farmers, and £30 by a levy on the parish. It is constructed in handmade bricks that were supplied by Sir Thomas Hesketh, the lord of the manor. A porch was added to the west end during the 20th century. West Lancashire Light Railway
The West Lancashire Light Railway (WLLR) is a narrow gauge railway that operates at Hesketh Bank, situated between Preston and Southport in North West England. The distance between the stations on the railway is , though track extends eastwards beyond Delph station on ledge above the old clay pit which is too narrow to contain a run round loop. An extension of up to , running along the north bank of the fishing lake has been proposed. The railway has seven steam locomotives, three of which are in operating condition; two are currently being rebuilt and another is on static display. There are also two electric locomotives and many IC locomotives. History The West Lancashire Light Railway was started in 1967, by six railway enthusiast schoolboys from the Hesketh Bank area. All Saints Church, Becconsall
All Saints Church is in Station Road, Hesketh Bank, Lancashire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Leyland, the archdeaconry of Blackburn, and the diocese of Blackburn. History The church was designed by the Lancaster architect Henry Paley of Austin and Paley, and built between 1925 and 1926. Plans had been made in 1923 for a church with a spire, which would have cost about £6,500 (), but these were scaled back, and the planned spire was replaced by a tower with a saddleback roof. The new church replaced a smaller church built in 1765, and the site was given by Major T. Fermor-Hesketh. The tower was completed by the same architect in 1935 at a cost of £721. Architecture The authors of the ''Buildings of England'' series state that this a small church, but that its broad west tower is "impressive". South Ribble (UK Parliament Constituency)
South Ribble is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Katherine Fletcher, a Conservative. History The seat of South Ribble was created for the 1983 general election, following the local government changes in the 1970s which saw the creation of the main constitutive borough of the same name. Former Preston North MP Robert Atkins won the South Ribble constituency in 1983 and fought the seat in every election up to the 1997 general election. Tarleton
Tarleton is a village and civil parish in the borough of West Lancashire, Lancashire, England. It situated in the Lancashire mosslands approximately 10 miles north east of Southport, approximately 10 miles south west of Preston, approximately 10 miles west of the (formerly mining and cotton milling) town of Chorley, and approximately 10 miles north of Ormskirk. West Lancashire Coastal Plain
The West Lancashire Coastal Plain is a large area in the south west of Lancashire, England. The plain stretches from the Rimrose Valley in Seaforth, near Liverpool on the Mersey, to the south, to Preston on the Ribble, to the north. To the east, the plain is bounded by the foothills of the Pennines, while the western edge of the plain is separated from the sea by sand dunes. It is very flat, and much of it is only a few metres above sea level. The terrain is mostly glacial in origin. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times, though large areas would have been marshy and contained Martin Mere. The WWT Martin Mere near the villages of Holmeswood and Tarlscough gives a glimpse of what this area may have looked like prior to reclamation.
