Derek Beaven (born 1947) is a British novelist. His first novel, ''Newton's Niece'', won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for best first book, Europe and South Asia. Don Beaven
Sir Donald Ward Beaven (31 August 1924 – 4 November 2009) was a New Zealand medical researcher in the area of diabetes treatment and prevention. He commenced full-time teaching and research at the Christchurch School of Medicine in 1960, and was appointed Foundation Professor in 1971. The Beaven Lecture Theatre in the School bears his name. Beaven was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1989 New Year Honours, for services to medicine and the community, and a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2005 New Year Honours, for services to persons with diabetes. He accepted re-designation as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in August 2009 after the restoration of titular honours by the New Zealand government. In March 2009, Beaven was commemorated as one of the Twelve Local Heroes, and a bronze bust of him was unveiled outside the Christchurch Arts Centre. Ellie Beaven (born 24 January 1980) is an English actress. Early life and education Beaven was born Ellen Patricia Beaven in Hammersmith, Greater London on 24 January 1980. Her mother Jennifer was born in Pakistan, which Beaven revealed in a newspaper interview while working on the TV series Down to Earth in 2001. She was educated at St Mary's R.C. Frederic Beaven
Frederic Hicks Beaven (11 April 1855 – 22 January 1941) was bishop of Mashonaland from 1911, through 1915 when his title was changed to bishop of Southern Rhodesia, until his retirement in 1925. History Born in Rodwell, Wiltshire, he was the eldest son of Christopher, a farmer, and Edith ( Hicks) Beaven who lived at Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire. Frederic had three brothers, all of whom emigrated to Australia, and two sisters. He married Georgina Braithwaite Dawes in 1883 in Brighton; they did not have any children. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's School, Wimborne Minster and University College, Durham. He was ordained in 1879 after studying at St Bees Theological College. James Beaven
James Beaven (9 July 1801 – 8 November 1875) was a Church of England clergyman and author, educated and employed in England until accepting an appointment as professor of divinity at King's College, Toronto, in 1843. Beaven was an accomplished classical scholar and wrote a number of books. Three of these were scholarly sermons. His subjects also included the writings of Cicero and the life and writings of St Irenaeus. A well known book documented a diocesan tour in 1845 by Bishop John Strachan. His ''Elements of Natural Theology'' is sometimes regarded as the first philosophical work written in English in Canada. Robert Beaven
Robert Beaven (January 20, 1836 – September 18, 1920), son of James Beaven, was a British Columbia politician and businessman. Beaven moved to British Columbia from Toronto, where he had been educated at Upper Canada College, because of the gold rush. He entered business in Victoria, which was then the capital of the Colony of Vancouver Island. After the colony's union with British Columbia, Beaven became involved with politics as secretary of Amor De Cosmos' Confederation League which advocated that the colony enter Canadian Confederation. Beaven was elected to the provincial legislature in 1871, the year of union with Canada, and served in the cabinets of De Cosmos and his successor George Anthony Walkem as chief commissioner of land and works. Thomas Daniel Beaven (March 1, 1851 – October 5, 1920) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the second bishop of the Diocese of Springfield in Massachusetts from 1892 to 1920. Biography Early life Thomas Beaven was born on March 1, 1851, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He received his early education there. After graduating from Holy Cross College at Worcester, Massachusetts in 1870, he taught mathematics at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland for a year. Beaven then studied theology at the Grand Seminary of Montreal in Montreal, Quebec. Beaven was ordained to the priesthood in Montreal by Archbishop Édouard-Charles Fabre for the Diocese of Springfield on December 18, 1875. He then served as assistant pastor of a parish in Spencer, Massachusetts, until 1879, when he became its pastor. In 1888, he was appointed pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
