Beauly Shinty Club
Beauly Shinty Club is a shinty club from Beauly, Scotland. The club was founded in 1892. The club has two sides, the first team competing in Marine Harvest National Division One and the second team in North Division One. History Beauly was founded in 1892, and has won the Camanachd Cup on three occasions, in 1891898 and 1913. After the 1898 triumph against Inveraray Shinty Club, Inveraray, Beauly competed against a London Camanachd side and was granted the title "Champions of the World". In 2005, the club won North Division One but due to league reconstruction remained in this division along with sides from the disbanded National League One. In 2006, they were again denied promotion to the top-flight but this time by losing 1–0 to South Division One runners up, Kyles Athletic in a play-off. Beauly
Beauly ( ; ; gd, A' Mhanachainn) is a village in the Highland area, on the River Beauly, west of Inverness by the Far North railway line. The town is historically within Kilmorack Parish of the Scottish County of Inverness. The land around Beauly is fertile - historically corn was grown extensively and more recently fruit has successfully been farmed. The village historically traded in coal, timber, lime, grain, and fish. History Early years Beauly is the site of the Beauly Priory, or the Priory Church of the Blessed Virgin and John the Baptist, founded in 1230 by John Byset of the Aird, for Valliscaulian monks. Following the Reformation, the buildings (except for the church, which is now a ruin) passed into the possession of Lord Lovat. Lovat (Shinty)
Lovat Shinty Club is a shinty club from Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire, Scotlandbr> The club was formed in 188and has a healthy rivalry with near neighbours Beauly Shinty Club, Beauly. The club takes its name from the area within which it plays in and shared this name with the late Second World War hero, Lord Lovat. History Founded in 1888, the club has never folded but did merge with Beauly Shinty Club, Beauly early in the 20th Century and won the Camanachd Cup in 1912/13 as the combined team. After the first war, the team also reached the final in 1925. In 1953 was Lovat's finest hour, achieving the Grand Slam, winning every single competitiothey entered at Senior and Junior level, they were the first club to ever achieve this feat. Shinty Teams
Shinty ( gd, camanachd, iomain) is a team game played with sticks and a ball. Shinty is now played mainly in the Scottish Highlands and amongst Highland migrants to the big cities of Scotland, but it was formerly more widespread in Scotland, and was even played in northern England into the second half of the 20th century and other areas in the world where Scottish Highlanders migrated. While comparisons are often made with field hockey the two games have several important differences. In shinty a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and is allowed to use both sides of the stick, called a ''caman'', which is wooden and slanted on both sides. The stick may also be used to block and to tackle, although a player may not come down on an opponent's stick, a practice called hacking. Battle Of Festubert
The Battle of Festubert (15–25 May 1915) was an attack by the British army in the Artois region of France on the western front during World War I. The offensive formed part of a series of attacks by the French Tenth Army and the British First Army in the Second Battle of Artois . After the failure of the breakthrough attempt by the First Army in the attack at Aubers Ridge (9 May 1915) tactics of a short hurricane bombardment and an infantry advance with unlimited objectives, were replaced by the French practice of slow and deliberate artillery-fire intended to prepare the way for an infantry attack. Balliemore Cup
The Balliemore Cup is a knock-out cup in the sport of shinty. It is the Intermediate Championship run under the auspices of the Camanachd Association and only first teams competing in the National, North Division One and South Division One are eligible for entry. History In the early 20th century, Captain Colin MacRae of Balliemore ran a shinty competition in the Kyles of Bute area, and the trophy was competed for by teams such as Kyles, Bute, North Bute, Balliemore and Rhubaan Rovers. The trophy was donated for competition by his brother, Major MacRae Gilstrap. Kyles Athletic Shinty Club is a shinty team from Tighnabruaich, Argyll, Scotland. It is one of the sport's most illustrious names, presently playing in the Marine Harvest Premiership with their second team is playing in South Division one. In 2012 they won the Camanachd Cup for the first time since 1994, defeating local rivals Inveraray in the final. History The club was founded in 1896 as ''Kyles Athletic Football and Shinty Club'', the same year as the first Camanachd Cup, which Kyles have gone on to win more times than any other club apart from the Badenoch giants, Newtonmore, sharing the second place spot with Kingussie, 21 times in all. London Camanachd
London Camanachd is a shinty club in England. They have historically been attached to the South District. They went into abeyance in 1992 but were reconstituted in 2005. They played the first officially recognised Shinty match outside Scotland in 80 years on Saturday 22 July 2006 against the Highlanders. Currently the club field men's and women's teams in English and Scottish competitions as well as exhibition matches in Europe, most recently in 2018 in Brussels. History The club was formed in 1874, being an amalgamation of London Northern Counties and London Scots. The club toured Scotland in 1909. Inveraray Shinty Club
Inveraray Shinty Club (Camanachd Inbhir Aora) is a shinty club from Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland. The first team plays in the Premier Division and the reserve team in South Division 1. History The club was formed after a public meeting in 1877. The club's first fixture was a 4–1 defeat by Vale of Leven in Govan. The club reached the Camanachd Cup final in the first season in which they competed in the tournament in 1898 but were beaten 2–0 by Beauly. The final was reached again in 1903 but Inveraray refused to travel to Inverness to face Kingussie after the first match at Perth was drawn, and the cup was awarded to Kingussie. The Camanachd Cup was finally won in 1925 however and Inveraray made a successful defence of the tournament the following year. In 1930 the Camanachd Cup was won for a third time.
