Bear Mountain (Siskiyou County, California)
Bear Mountain is a mountain located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California in the United States. The summit, located in Siskiyou County, California, Siskiyou County, is at an elevation of . The highest point in Del Norte County, California, Del Norte County is located just west of the summit at about 6404+ feet (1952+ meters). The mountain is in the Siskiyou Wilderness and straddles the county boundary, which also separates the Six Rivers National Forest, Six Rivers and Klamath National Forest, Klamath national forests. A cirque named Devils Punchbowl containing a Tarn (lake), tarn is located on the mountain's north side. Due to its location near the Pacific Ocean, the mountain normally receives tremendous snowfall during the winter. This is a list of highest points in California, in alphabetical order by county. All elevations use the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88), the currently accepted vertical control datum for United States, Canada and Mexico. Elevations are from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) when available. Others are from the United States Geological Survey topographic maps when available. These can be found on the Peakbagger.com web pages. Elevations followed by a plus sign (+) were interpolated by the compiler using topographic map contour lines. The true elevation is between that shown and the elevation plus the contour line interval which is forty feet in most instances. Elevations from the NGS are rounded to the nearest whole number. Siskiyou County (, ) is a county in the northernmost part of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,076. Its county seat is Yreka and its highest point is Mount Shasta. It falls within the Cascadia bioregion. Siskiyou County is in the Shasta Cascade region along with the Oregon border. Siskiyou Mountains
The Siskiyou Mountains are a coastal subrange of the Klamath Mountains, and located in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon in the United States. They extend in an arc for approximately from east of Crescent City, California, northeast along the north side of the Klamath River into Josephine and Jackson counties in Oregon. The mountain range forms a barrier between the watersheds of the Klamath River to the south and the Rogue River to the north. Accordingly, much of the range is within the Rogue River – Siskiyou and Klamath national forests, and the Pacific Crest Trail follows a portion of the crest of the Siskiyous. The Siskiyou Wilderness is a federal wilderness area designated by the passage of the California Wilderness Act of 1984. Six Rivers National Forest
The Six Rivers National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in the northwestern corner of California. It was established on June 3, 1947 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman from portions of Klamath, Siskiyou and Trinity National Forests. Its over one million acres (4,000 km2) of land contain a variety of ecosystems and of old growth forest. Cirque
A (; from the Latin word ') is an amphitheatre-like valley formed by glacial erosion. Alternative names for this landform are corrie (from Scottish Gaelic , meaning a pot or cauldron) and (; ). A cirque may also be a similarly shaped landform arising from fluvial erosion. The concave shape of a glacial cirque is open on the downhill side, while the cupped section is generally steep. Cliff-like slopes, down which ice and glaciated debris combine and converge, form the three or more higher sides. A tarn (or corrie loch) is a Proglacial lake, proglacial mountain lake, pond or pool, formed in a cirque excavated by a glacier. A moraine may form a natural dam below a tarn. Etymology The word is toponymy, derived from the Old Norse word ''tjörn'' ("a small mountain lake without tributaries") meaning pond.
