Bear Island (New Brunswick)
Bear Island is a Name Place in Queensbury Parish, New Brunswick, Canada, located on the north shore of the Saint John River. History Named "Island of the Bear" by the Maliseet people, the location takes its name from islands (Big Bear and the Little Bear Islands) in the Saint John River. One story claims that bears fished in the narrow channels between the islands, while others claim that bears would frequent the butternut trees native to the islands. With the development of the downstream Mactaquac Dam in 1968 and the consequential rise in water levels, Bear Island is technically a misnomer, as the islands no longer exist, and the entire area referred to as Bear Island is on the shore of the dam's 96-kilometre headpond. Many of the area's homes were razed in order to make way for the headpond. Beeren Island (''Beeren Eylandt'' in the original Dutch), also known as Barren Island or Bear Island, is an island in the Hudson River within the town of Coeymans, New York. It lies south of the city of Albany, and is at the border of four counties, Albany, Greene (to the south), Columbia (to the southeast), and Rensselaer (to the east). Beeren Island was once referred to as ''Mach-a-wa-meck'', which may come from ''mashq'' (bear) and ''wamock'' (enough), meaning "place of many bears" and would make it in agreement with the Dutch name. Bere Island or Bear Island (, although officially called ''An tOileán Mór'' meaning "the big island") is an island in Bantry Bay off the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. Bear Island or Isla Teniente González is a rocky island lying west of Stonington Island in Marguerite Bay, off the coast of Graham Land. Bear Island was presumably known to the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) (1934-1937) and the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) Expedition (1939-1941), both based in the Stonington Island area. The Medvezhyi Islands, or Bear Islands (russian: Медве́жьи острова́; sah, Эhэлээх арыылар, ''Eheleex Arıılar'') is an uninhabited group of islands at the western end of the Kolyma Gulf of the East Siberian Sea.
