Beaches—East York (provincial Electoral District)
Beaches—East York is a provincial riding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It elects one member to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. It was created in 1996 from parts of Beaches—Woodbine (95%), Don Mills (40%), and York East (20%). When the riding was created, it included the former borough of East York east of Coxwell Avenue and that part of Old Toronto east of a line following Coxwell to Gerrard Street to Greenwood Avenue to Queen Street to Leslie Street. In 2007, the boundaries were altered so that everything west of Coxwell Avenue was transferred to Toronto—Danforth. Toronto—Danforth (formerly Broadview—Greenwood) is a provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1999. It lies to the east of Downtown Toronto, Downtown Toronto. The riding is represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario by Peter Tabuns of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP). Toronto—Danforth includes an array of ethnicities, including large Greek, Chinese, Muslim and East-Indian communities. The northern portion of the riding, East York, tends to lean right-of-centre, while the southern half, including Riverdale, Toronto, Riverdale, Leslieville and Riverside, Toronto, Riverside, usually swings to the left. Frances Lankin
Frances Lankin, (born April 16, 1954), is a Canadian senator, former president and CEO of United Way Toronto, and a former Ontario MPP and cabinet minister in the NDP government of Bob Rae between 1990 and 1995. From 2010 to 2012, she co-chaired a government commission review of social assistance in Ontario. From 2009 to 2016, she was a member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee. Lankin was appointed to the Senate on March 18, 2016 on the advice of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Background Lankin was born in London, Ontario. Kevin Clarke (politician)
Kevin Mark Clarke (born March 21, 1964) is a Canadian former educator, activist and perennial candidate who is the founder and former leader of The People's Political Party. He is considered one of the most recognizable homeless persons in the city of Toronto, campaigning on "the people's rights." Clarke advocates for comprehensive reform in the criminal justice system, to create a system that prevents recidivism among first-time offenders. He has proposed a program that he claims would reduce the recidivism which allegedly violent prison environments create: 'The Inmate Monitored Education System' otherwise known as T.I.M.E., which would aim to help eliminate the claimed harmful influence of prison life on first-time offenders. Robert Hunter (journalist)
Robert Lorne Hunter (October 13, 1941 – May 2, 2005) was a Canadian environmentalist, journalist, author and politician. He was a member of the Don't Make a Wave Committee in 1969, and a co-founder of Greenpeace in 1971 and its first president. He led the first on-sea anti-whaling campaigns in the world, against Russian and Australian whalers, which helped lead to the ban on commercial whaling. He campaigned against nuclear testing, the Canadian seal hunt and later, climate change with his book ''Thermageddon: Countdown to 2030.'' Michael David Prue (born July 14, 1948) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. Prue was mayor of East York, Ontario from 1993 to 1997 and subsequently represented the riding of Beaches—East York in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2001 to 2014 as member of the New Democratic Party (NDP)'s Queen's Park caucus.
