Beach Volleyball At The 2022 Commonwealth Games
Beach volleyball is among the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham, England. This will be the second staging of beach volleyball at the Commonwealth Games since its debut four years prior, and therefore the first staging within England specifically. Both tournaments are scheduled to take place between 30 July and 7 August 2022. Schedule The competition schedule is as follows: Full match schedules were released on 1 July 2022. Venue The competitions will be held in a temporary Games-time venue at the brownfield site in Smithfield, named after the market that once stood in its place. The venue will also play host to 3x3 basketball, 3x3 wheelchair basketball, and the start of the marathon; after the Games, it will be dismantled and the site subject to a redevelopment scheme. Smithfield, Birmingham
Smithfield was an inner-city area of Birmingham, England, southeast of the Bull Ring markets. Smithfield Market The area was originally the site of the Birmingham Manor House in which the De Birmingham family had lived for centuries. The house had fallen into decay, a situation it had been in many times since the 16th century. The manor house was purchased by the Birmingham Street Commissioners from Sir Thomas Gooch. The house was demolished and the moat filled in in 1816. Twelve feet of silt was removed from the moat. The establishment of a market in the area was made possible by the lack of density of the buildings and was described in 1848 as "a spacious area." It was built on the site of the ancient manor house moat. The Smithfield Market was opened on Whitsun Fair Thursday, 29 May 1817 by the Birmingham Street Commissioners. Melissa Humana-Paredes (born October 10, 1992) is a Canadian beach volleyball player, who is partnered with Brandie Wilkerson. Humana-Paredes won the women's gold medal with Sarah Pavan at the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships. FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings is a ranking system for men's and women's national teams in beach volleyball. The teams of the member nations of the FIVB, beach volleyball and volleyball's world governing body, are ranked based on their competition results with the most successful teams being ranked highest. The ranking is based on the 8 best results over the last 365 days. They are updated every Monday after an FIVB recognized event. The rankings are used in international competitions to define the seeded teams and arrange them in pools.
