''Beach Chair'' is a short computer animation test clip created by animator Eben Ostby for Pixar in 1986. Eben Fiske Ostby
Eben Fiske Ostby (born February 24, 1955) is a pioneer computer graphics software developer, animator, and technical director for motion pictures. Ostby was born in Hampton, Connecticut, United States. He graduated from Pomfret School and Vassar College, where he was its "first computer science major". He joined Pixar when the company was a garage start-up, as one of the first four employees of its animation department along with John Lasseter. There, he worked on early breakthrough animation shorts such as ''Luxo Jr.'', '' Red's Dream'', ''Tin Toy'', '' Knick Knack'', and '' For the Birds''. He became Vice President for Software. In 1998, he shared the Academy Award, Scientific and Engineering with three other people for the development of the Marionette 3-D Computer Animation System. William Reeves (animator)
William "Bill" Reeves (born May 5, 1959) is a Canadian animator and technical director known for working with John Lasseter on the animated shorts ''Luxo Jr.'' and ''The Adventures of André and Wally B.'' After obtaining a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and completing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, Reeves was hired by George Lucas as a member of Lucasfilm's Computer Division, Computer Graphics Group. He was one of the founding employees of Pixar when it was sold in 1986 to Steve Jobs. Reeves is the inventor of the first motion blur algorithm and methods to simulate particle motion in CGI. ''Flags and Waves'' is a short computer animation test clip which was created by animator Bill Reeves and Alain Fournier for Pixar sometime in 1986. 2009 Vintage Books edition: , p. 91Excerpt availableat Google Books. The clip included waves reflecting a sunset and lapping against the shore. Reeves and Fournier made the project with the feedback of John Lasseter to work out details of rendering water and waves realistically, including lighting, motion, and shading. It was first exhibited at SIGGRAPH in Dallas in August 1986, along with Lasseter’s landmark computer animated short ''Luxo Jr.'' and another test project ''Beach Chair'', by Eben Ostby. The methods developed during the creation of this project were the basis of the water in ''Finding Nemo''. It is based on an oceanographic model of ocean waves which Fournier dug out of the literature from the nineteenth century. Computer Animation
Computer animation is the process used for digitally generating animations. The more general term computer-generated imagery (CGI) encompasses both static scenes ( still images) and dynamic images ( moving images), while computer animation refers to moving images. Modern computer animation usually uses 3D computer graphics to generate a three-dimensional picture. The target of the animation is sometimes the computer itself, while other times it is film. Computer animation is essentially a digital successor to stop motion techniques, but using 3D models, and traditional animation techniques using frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations.
