The United States census of 2000, conducted by the Census Bureau, determined the resident population of the United States on April 1, 2000, to be 281,421,906, an increase of 13.2 percent over the 248,709,873 people enumerated during the 1990 census. Cortland is a city in central Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. It lies on the eastern shore of Mosquito Creek Lake, north of Youngstown. The population was 7,105 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area. History The area was once known as Baconsburg, after Samuel Bacon, who built a sawmill and several buildings in the area during the early 19th century. Cortland became a village in 1874 with the construction of a railroad depot. It became a city in 1980 when its population exceeded 5,000 people.
