Bayport Aerodrome
Bayport Aerodrome (formerly known as Davis Field and then from 1953-1977 as Edwards Airport) is a historic rural airport one mile northwest of Bayport, New York. The airport has a grass runway and is owned and operated by the Town of Islip. It is home to a non-profit organization that specializes in antique airplanes, known as the Bayport Aerodrome Society, which was established in 1972. Bayport Aerodrome is not used for commercial aviation, such as the nearby Long Island MacArthur Airport. Islip ( ) is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the south shore of Long Island. The population was 335,543 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous city or town in the state. The Town of Islip also contains a smaller, unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place named Islip. History Matthias Nicoll relocated to New York from Islip, Northamptonshire, England, in 1664. His son, William Nicoll, became a royal patentee of the east end of what is now the Town of Islip, and his domain reached from East Islip to Bayport and included Sayville, West Sayville, Oakdale, Great River, Islip Terrace, Central Islip, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Bohemia, Brentwood, Holtsville and a portion of Ronkonkoma. Long Island MacArthur Airport (formerly known as Islip Airport) is a public airport in Ronkonkoma, New York, on Long Island. The Town of Islip owns and operates the airport, which serves about two million airline passengers a year, as well as general aviation. Long Island MacArthur Airport (LIMA) covers 1,311 acres (531 ha) and has three runways and two helipads. MacArthur Airport serves Nassau and Suffolk counties as an alternative to the JFK and LaGuardia airports – both in Queens in New York City.
