She was particularly active in the fields of health and sociology of the third world and international development, and especially on the gendered aspects of development. 	Nicholas Baylies Nicholas Baylies (April 9, 1768April 14, 1847) was a Vermont lawyer, politician, and judge. He served as a justice of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1831 to 1833. Biography Nicholas Baylies was born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts on April 9, 1768, the son of Deacon Nicholas Baylies (1739-1831) and Abigail Wood Baylies (1742-1788), and the grandson of Thomas Baylies, a well known New England ironmaster. He was educated in Uxbridge, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1794. Baylies moved to Woodstock, Vermont after finishing college, and studied law with Charles Marsh. After attaining admission to the bar, Baylies practiced law in Woodstock as Marsh's partner until 1809, when he relocated to Montpelier. In 1813, Baylies served on the state Council of Censors, which met every seven years to review actions of Vermont's government and ensure their constitutionality. Origins and family Thomas Baylies was the son of Nicholas Baylies of Alvechurch in north Worcestershire. On 5 June 1706, he married Esther, daughter of Thomas Seargeant of Fulford Heath, in Solihull in a Quaker ceremony at which 38 witnesses were present. They had eight children. Esther's sister Mary married Abraham Darby I. Coalbrookdale By 1714, Baylies had joined his brother-in-law, Abraham Darby, at his Coalbrookdale ironworks, becoming a partner with him and John Chamberlain. Together they built a second blast furnace at Coalbrookdale and secured the rights to build a furnace at Dolgûn near Dolgellau and taking over Vale Royal Furnace in 1718. 	Francis Baylies Francis Baylies (October 16, 1783 – October 28, 1852) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, and brother of congressman William Baylies. His great-grandfather was Thomas Baylies, an ironmaster from Coalbrookdale, England, who immigrated to Boston in 1737. Baylies was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1783, the son of Dr. William Baylies (1742–1826). He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1810 and commenced practice in Taunton, Massachusetts. He later served as Register of Probate for Bristol County 1812–1820. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1818 to the Sixteenth Congress.
