The Bayfront Parkway is a highway in Erie, Pennsylvania, in the United States, primarily running along the shore of Lake Erie's Presque Isle Bay. Carrying the state quadrant route designation of State Route 4034 (SR 4034), it continues as Interstate 79 (I-79) on the western end and the Bayfront Connector, part of Pennsylvania Route 290 (PA 290), on the eastern end. Route description The Bayfront Parkway begins at the northern terminus of I-79 in the city of Erie in Erie County, heading east-northeast as a four-lane undivided road designated as SR 4034. The road passes through commercial areas and turns north, narrowing to three lanes with one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes. UPMC Hamot, formerly known as Hamot Medical Center, is a 446-bed hospital and a tertiary-care medical facility located in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is one of the largest employers in the Erie region. The complex features several large buildings, including a heart institute. It was founded in 1881. History Hamot was founded as the Hamot Hospital Association on February 7, 1881. The hospital was named after Pierre Simon Vincent Hamot, a successful French businessman who had settled in Erie in the early 19th century and became an active member of the community. Italo Cappabianca
Italo S. Cappabianca was a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1955 and earned a degree in political science from Gannon University in 1968. He was elected to represent the 2nd legislative district in 1978, following the resignation of Robert E. Bellomini. He married his wife Linda Lou Cappabianca late in life, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with two fellow legislators, Bill DeWeese and Frank Serafini. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in the summer of 1999 and underwent an experimental gene therapy treatment at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He died on May 28, 2001. Gannon University offers the "Italo S. Cappabianca Scholarship," an endowed scholarship in his name. Fort Presque Isle
Fort Presque Isle (also Fort de la Presqu'île) was a fort built by French soldiers in summer 1753 along Presque Isle Bay at present-day Erie, Pennsylvania, to protect the northern terminus of the Venango Path. It was the first of the French posts built in the Ohio Country, and was part of a line that included Fort Le Boeuf, Fort Machault, and Fort Duquesne. History The fort was built as part of the French military occupation of the Ohio Country; rival claims to the area by the British led to the French and Indian War. After the 1759 British victory at the Battle of Fort Niagara, the French burned the fort and retreated from the area. Erie Maritime Museum is a maritime museum located on Presque Isle Bay which rests on the waterfront in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. When it opened its doors on May 21, 1998, it became the first new Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission-affiliated museum in twenty years. Erie County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is the northernmost county in Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 270,876. Its county seat is Erie.
