Baxenden Railway Station
Baxenden railway station served the villages of Baxenden in Hyndburn and Rising Bridge in Rossendale Valley, Rossendale. It was situated just inside the old boundary of Haslingden on the line from to , which was opened in 1848 by the East Lancashire Railway 1844–1859, East Lancashire Railway. The station gave its name to the nearby Baxenden Bank, the two-mile section towards Accrington that included gradients List of steepest gradients on adhesion railways, as steep as 1 in 38. The Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Company built a tramline from Accrington in 1887 that terminated at the station. The station closed to passengers in 1951, some fifteen years before the line serving it suffered a similar fate. References

Baxenden is a village and ward in the Borough of Hyndburn in Lancashire, North-West England. The ward population taken at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 4,042. Hyndburn
Hyndburn is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. Its council is based in Accrington and covers the outlying towns of Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Oswaldtwistle and Rishton. The borough was created in 1974 and takes its name from the River Hyndburn. It had a population of 80,734 at the 2011 Census. The Rossendale Valley is in the Rossendale area of Lancashire, England, between the West Pennine Moors and the main range of the Pennines. List Of Steepest Gradients On Adhesion Railways
The inclusion of steep gradients on railways avoids the expensive engineering works required to produce more gentle gradients. However the maximum feasible gradient is limited by how much of a load the locomotive(s) can haul upwards. Braking when travelling downhill is also a limiting factor. There have been various solutions to hauling rail mounted vehicles up or down inclines. These include simple rail adhesion, rack railways and cable inclines (including rail mounted water tanks to carry barges). To help with braking on the descent, a non-load-bearing "brake rail" located between the running rails can be used, similar to the rail used in the Fell system, e.g. by the Snaefell Mountain Railway on the Isle of Man. Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Company operated a steam-powered passenger tramway service in Accrington between 1886 and 1907.
