Bawk Ja
Bawk Ja Lum Nyoi ( my, ဘောက်ဂျာ, born 4 December 1967) is an ethnic Kachin land rights activist and politician from Burma (Myanmar). She serves as the chair of the National Democratic Force's Kachin State branch. She lives in Aungya village, Hpakant Township. Early life and education She matriculated from Basic Education High School in Kyauktada Township, Rangoon. In 1993, she graduated from Yangon University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Career In October 2010, she led a group of Hukawng Valley farmers whose lands had been confiscated (over of farmland), and sued Yuzana Company and its chairman Htay Myint (MP), over the illegal land confiscations. Her advocacy work brought her national attention. Ohn Myint (politician)
Ohn Myint ( my, အုန်းမြင့်, born ) was the Burmese Minister for Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development from 2011 to 2016. From March 2011 to August 2012, he concurrently served as the Minister of Cooperatives, until he vacated the post in September after a reshuffle of President Thein Sein's cabinet. Ohn Myint appears on the European Union list of sanctioned regime members, as he served as a member of the State Peace and Development Council, the military regime that ruled Burma until 2010. He is married to Nu Nu Swe. In 2010, he resigned from the military, in order to stand as a Union Solidarity and Development Party candidate in the 2010 Burmese general election. He won a Pyithu Hluttaw seat representing Hpakant Township in Kachin State by a majority of 29,426, defeating his primary opponent, Bawk Ja from the National Democratic Force, an ethnic Kachin activist. Negligent Homicide
Negligent homicide is a criminal charge brought against a person who, through criminal negligence, allows another person to die. Examples include the crash of Aeroperu Flight 603 near Lima, Peru. The accident was caused by a piece of duct tape that was left over the static ports (on the bottom side of the fuselage) after cleaning the aircraft, which led to the crash. Kachin Independence Army
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA; Kachin: ''ShangLawt Hpyen''; my, ကချင်လွတ်လပ်ရေးတပ်မတော်) is a non-state armed group and the military wing of the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO), a political group of ethnic Kachins in Northern Myanmar (formerly Burma). The Kachins are a coalition of six tribes whose homeland encompasses territory in China's Yunnan, Northeast India and Kachin State in Myanmar. The Kachin Independence Army is funded by the KIO, which raises money through regional taxes and trade in jade, timber and gold. It is armed with a combination of AK-47s, locally-made rifles (such as KA) and some artillery. Kachin Independence Army headquarters are in Laiza, in southern Kachin State near the Chinese border. 2012 Burmese By-elections
The 2012 Myanmar by-elections were held on 1 April 2012. The elections were held to fill 48 vacant parliamentary seats. Three of those remained vacant as polling in three Kachin constituencies was postponed. There was no plan to fill the additional five seats cancelled in the 2010 election and one seat vacated after the decease of a RNDP member. The main opposition party National League for Democracy was re-registered for the by-elections on 13 December 2011 as part of the reforms in Burma since 2010. It won in 43 of the 44 seats they contested (out of 45 available). Its leader Aung San Suu Kyi ran for the seat of Kawhmu, and won. Myitsone Dam
The Myitsone Dam ( my, မြစ်ဆုံ တာတမံ ; 'Confluence Dam') is a large dam and hydroelectric power development project which was planned to be built in northern Myanmar (also known as Burma). The proposed construction site is at the confluence of the Mali and N’mai rivers and the source of the Irawaddy River (Ayeyawady River). the project is suspended, but China has been lobbying to revive the dam. Had the dam been completed according to plans in 2017 it would have been the fifteenth largest hydroelectric power station in the world. The dam, planned to be long and high, was to be built by the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydropower Company. The company is a joint venture between the China Power Investment Corporation (CPI), the Burmese Government's Ministry of Electric Power, and the Asia World Company.
