Baven Penton
Harry Baven Penton (1890–1967) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre-forward for Southampton and Boscombe prior to the First World War. Playing career Penton was born in Boscombe, Bournemouth in early 1890 and was a prolific marksman in his minor league days, scoring 60 in one season with Pokesdown and 26 in another for Boscombe. His form attracted him to Southern League Southampton who were suffering from a lack of a suitable centre-forward, as the regular choice, Percy Prince was injured and replacement Sid Kimpton was not scoring regularly. Penton moved across the New Forest in February 1911 and made his debut for Southampton at Crystal Palace on 25 February 1911, scoring in his home debut at The Dell in his next match (against Brentford). He retained his place until the end of the season, although he failed to live up to expectations with only three goals from twelve appearances. Boscombe
Boscombe is a suburb of Bournemouth, England. Historically in Hampshire, but today in Dorset, it is located to the east of Bournemouth town centre and west of Southbourne. Originally a sparsely inhabited area of heathland, from around 1865 Boscombe developed rapidly from a small village into a seaside resort alongside Bournemouth. Its first pier opened in 1889. There are numerous architectural styles within the town, ranging from the elaborate Victorian style of the Royal Arcade and St Clement's Church, notable examples of Art Deco such as the former Gas & Water Company store at 709 Christchurch Road, and the modernist 1950s styles of the pier and Overstrand buildings. The Dell in Milton Road, Southampton, Hampshire, England was the home ground of Southampton F.C. between 1898 and 2001. New stadium Since 1896, Southampton had been tenants of Hampshire County Cricket Club at the County Ground, having vacated the Antelope Ground in the summer of 1896. The rent payable to the cricket club (£200 p.a.) was putting a strain on the football club's finances and, in an attempt to reduce this burden, the club had considered a merger with the Freemantle club and a move to their ground in Shirley. In many team sports which involve scoring goals, the goalkeeper (sometimes termed goaltender, netminder, GK, goalie or keeper) is a designated player charged with directly preventing the opposing team from scoring by blocking or intercepting opposing shots on goal. Such positions exist in bandy, rink bandy, camogie, association football, Gaelic football, international rules football, floorball, handball, hurling, field hockey, ice hockey, roller hockey, lacrosse, ringette, rinkball, water polo, and shinty as well as in other sports. Archie Small
Archibald Rammell Small (1889–1955) was an English amateur sports, amateur association football, footballer who played at inside-forward for Southampton F.C., Southampton in the years prior to World War I. Football career Small was born in Droitwich, Worcestershire and was a prominent member of the Royal Engineers football team when employed at the Ordnance Survey offices in Southampton. He joined Southampton F.C., Southampton as an amateur in 1911, making his first team (association football)#F, first-team debut at inside-right, when he scored in a 2–2 draw at West Ham United F.C., West Ham on 9 September 1911.
