Baugewerkschule, Königsberg
The Baugewerkschule was a building trades school in Königsberg, Germany. History The school was founded on Synagogenstraße, Vordere Vorstadt, as the Königliche Gewerbeschule (royal vocational school) in 1821. Renamed the Staatliche Baugewerkschule (state building trades school) in 1892, it was relocated to Schönstraße, Mitteltragheim, in 1897. During the school year of 1897 to 1898, the Baugewerkschule contained 232 students, most of whom were masons and carpenters, and 26 faculty. The institution was led by the architect and historian Eugen von Czihak from 1892 to 1902. Beginning in 1914, the building housed a field hospital during World War I. It had 302 students enrolled by 1922. In 1938, it became a state technical school for structural and civil engineering. It ceased its role in 1945 as a result of World War II. Hans Manteuffel
Hans Manteuffel (24 October 1879 – 17 January 1963) was a German architect. Manteuffel was born in Osterode in East Prussia, German Empire (now Ostróda, Poland). He attended the Baugewerkschule, Königsberg from 1900 to 1902 and started to work as a freelance architect in 1912. He was responsible for the construction of the Siebert & Kiewe Office building at Königsberg's Altstädtischer Markt in 1928, the Disconto-Gesellschaft building at Vorstädtische Langgasse and the Alhambra cinema at Steindamm. Bruno Taut
Bruno Julius Florian Taut (4 May 1880 – 24 December 1938) was a renowned German architect, urban planner and author of Prussian Lithuanian heritage ("taut" means "nation" in Lithuanian). He was active during the Weimar period and is known for his theoretical works as well as his building designs. Early life and career Taut was born in Königsberg in 1880. After secondary school, he studied at the Baugewerkschule. In the following years, Taut worked in the offices of various architects in Hamburg and Wiesbaden. In 1903, he was employed by Bruno Möhring in Berlin, where he acquainted himself with ''Jugendstil'' and new building methods combining steel with masonry. From 1904 to 1908, Taut worked in Stuttgart for Theodor Fischer and studied urban planning. He received his first commission through Fischer in 1906, which involved the renovation of the village church in Unterriexingen. Königsberg (, ) was the historic Prussian city that is now Kaliningrad, Russia.
