Battling Bates
''Battling Bates'' is a 1923 American silent Western film directed by Webster Cullison and starring Edmund Cobb, Florence Gilbert and Ashton Dearholt. Plot Fred Porter is U.S. Secret Service agent on the trail of a gang of outlaws. Entering a cattle community as a stranger, Porter rescues a young rancher from an ambush. It seems that a jealous woman, rejected by the ranger who has been wooing another in town, has sent her henchmen out to kill him. The culprits happen to be members of the same gang that Porter has been tracking. Ashton Dearholt (April 4, 1894 – April 27, 1942) was an American actor of the silent film era. He appeared in 75 films between 1915 and 1938. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and died in Los Angeles, California. He was sometimes billed as Richard Holt. Biography Dearholt worked with Universal Studios on a number of melodramas during the 1910s but usually worked outside the studio system, producing and starring in a series of "Pinto Pete" Western during the 1920s. He occasionally acted under the name Richard Holt. He founded Ashton Dearholt Productions in 1924. Ten years later, Dearholt and Edgar Rice Burroughs founded the film production company Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises when he was filming ''The New Adventures of Tarzan''. Edmund Fessenden Cobb (June 23, 1892 – August 15, 1974) was an American actor who appeared in more than 620 films between 1912 and 1966. Biography Cobb was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the son of William Henry Cobb and Eddie (Edmundie) Ross. His maternal grandfather, Edmund G. Ross, was a newspaper editor, a governor of the New Mexico territory, a senator from Kansas, and a leader in the abolitionist movement in the United States. Despite his grandfather's efforts to lead Cobb into a career in politics, an initial effort in acting in a locally produced play turned him in that direction for a career. When he was 18, he worked for the St. Louis Motion Picture Company when it made a film in Albuquerque. Other roles with other companies followed. She was renowned for playing supporting roles alongside such actors as William Fairbanks and Jack Hoxie. Biography Florence Ella Gleistein was born to George Gleistein and Maude Kern in Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 14 (c. 1918) with her brother and mother in the hopes of discovering a career in the film industry.
